History of UFG
The Federal University of Goiás was established on December 14, 1960, after a meeting of five higher education schools that existed in Goiânia. From then on, Goiás began to train its own professional staff and no longer depended on qualified labor from other regions of Brazil.
For those from Goiás dreaming of the spots offered by UFG, this created an opportunity for professional and intellectual training in a public, free, and quality institution.
However, this victory for the Goiânia society preceded a process that required significant efforts from teachers and students at the time. In 1959, the teachers from the five schools (areas) that constituted UFG at its foundation formed the “Permanent Commission for the Creation of the University of Central Brazil,” which was chaired by Professor Colemar Natal e Silva, the then-director of the Law School of Goiânia. The purpose of the commission was to design a proposal for the creation of the university and submit it to the National Congress.
Along with the mobilization of the teachers, the Goiânia students, who dreamed of the spots in UFG’s courses, began a fervent movement for the creation of a public university to be maintained by the federal government. They generated, in April 1959, the University Front for Federal Education, which began meetings, hearings, and debates with authorities in assemblies or student congresses, and organized marches and rallies.
Thus, UFG was established, which currently offers various undergraduate courses and continues to provide spots for specialization courses, as mentioned throughout the text.
