Central Bank Warns Customers About Security Incident That Affected Registration Data of Users With Accounts at Caixa Econômica.

The Central Bank issued an important statement on 12/11 for all Brazilians who have accounts at Caixa Econômica, highlighting a recent security incident that resulted in the leakage of Pix key data.

This episode, which occurred between September 24 and 25, exposed registration information of 644 users, including names, CPF, financial institution of relationship, agency, and other relevant details, according to the Central Bank.

URGENT: Central Bank Reveals Data Leak for Those With Accounts at Caixa Econômica!

According to the Central Bank, the leak involved administrative data linked to the Pix keys of the affected users. This information includes the account holder’s name, CPF, agency, and account number, type of account, and the date of creation and ownership of the Pix key.

It is important to emphasize that more sensitive data, such as passwords and bank balances, were not compromised. The Central Bank assures that, while this information is confidential in nature, it does not allow direct access to the financial transactions of the accounts.

Protection Measures and Communication Adopted

After identifying the leak, the Central Bank stated that it is taking steps to investigate the incident and impose penalties where applicable, as provided for in bank security regulations.

The institution also clarified that notifications to affected users will occur exclusively through Caixa Econômica’s apps and internet banking, avoiding any type of contact via messages, calls, SMS or emails, to prevent scams.

Considering the risk of fraud arising from the incident, the Central Bank recommends that all Caixa Econômica customers remain vigilant about their information and transactions. Some security tips include:

Be suspicious of communications that ask for personal or banking data. Carefully verify the information of official contacts when receiving financial messages.

Use two-step authentication features in banking apps. Regularly monitor bank statements to identify any suspicious activity.

History of Leaks Since Pix

Since the launch of Pix in 2019, this is the 16th data leak related to the system, but it is considered one of the smallest in terms of exposed records. Nevertheless, the Central Bank and Caixa Econômica Federal reinforce their commitment to digital security and the protection of user data.

In situations like this, the Central Bank plays a fundamental role in establishing security standards for the financial system, while it is up to Caixa Econômica to enhance the protection of its digital platforms.

So far, Caixa Econômica Federal has not issued an official statement, but more details are expected to be provided soon, reassuring users with accounts at Caixa Econômica about preventative measures.

The Importance of Digital Security

Digital security is essential to protect personal and financial data. Given the increasing digitalization of banking services, the Central Bank recommends that users be aware of the most common fraudulent tactics, such as fake links sent via SMS or email, and websites that mimic official platforms to steal data.

Tips to Avoid Scams and Maintain Security To prevent fraud, it is essential:

Always confirm the source of messages and avoid clicking on suspicious links. Keep security systems, such as browsers and antivirus, always updated.

Use only official channels for information about services and financial assistance, such as the Caixa website (caixa.gov.br) and the Caixa app, ensuring secure and protected access.

The Central Bank remains committed to ensuring the security of the Brazilian financial system, and this statement aims to reinforce the trust of users with accounts at Caixa Econômica, as well as increase awareness of the importance of safe practices in the use of digital services.
