With The Capacity To Produce 80% Of Roraima’s Energy Consumption, The Jaguatirica II Thermoelectric Plant Is Considered The Largest In The State
Located in the Bom Intento region, rural area of Boa Vista, the Jaguatirica II thermoelectric plant is considered one of the most significant generators for the state of Roraima. With a total capacity of 140.834 MW, the plant operates on natural gas. This gas is extracted from the Azulão field, also operated by Eneva in the Amazon Basin. The field began operations only in September of last year, 20 years after its discovery.

According to the Folha BV, on February 15, the Jaguatirica II thermoelectric plant, operated by the Eneva energy company in Roraima, received authorization from the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) to begin commercial operation of the first production unit, initially capable of generating 48.653 MegaWatts.
Inaugurated by President Jair Bolsonaro, the Jaguatirica II plant marks the beginning of the effective change in the energy matrix of the state by replacing diesel energy, which is more polluting and costly. The thermoelectric plant, according to Eneva, can resolve energy instability in Roraima, as it has the potential to supply over 80% of the state’s consumption.

Given that it is the only Federal Unit in the country not connected to the National Energy System, Roraima is therefore entirely dependent on local energy generation.
Also in Roraima, other thermoelectric energy generation units are expected to begin commercial operations in the coming months. According to the Eneva company, this will help reduce energy costs and pollutant emissions.
The Jaguatirica II thermoelectric plant is the first project from Auction of Isolated Systems No. 01/2019 to start commercial operations and is expected to be the largest plant in the state of Roraima, in the northern region of the country.
About The Azulão Project, Linked To The Jaguatirica II Thermoelectric Plant
Petrobras sold Azulão to Eneva in November 2017 for over 54 million dollars. The site was discovered in 1999 and declared commercial after 5 years, in 2004. However, up until the time of its sale, 13 years later, it had not been put into operation by the state-owned company.
The production of natural gas in the Azulão field only began in May 2021. In September of the same year, sales began. By the end of 2021, in November, Eneva obtained a license from the state’s environmental agency — State Foundation for the Environment and Water Resources (Femarh) to operate the Jaguatirica II thermoelectric plant.
