About 4,000 Liters of Oil Have Been Removed from the Beaches in Ceará. It Is the Second Event of This Kind Only in 2022 in the State
Beaches in the Northeast are being affected by patches of crude oil. The episode recalls the environmental disaster that occurred in 2019. On Saturday, 64 polluted beaches in Ceará were already identified due to the oil patches – it is the second event of this kind only in 2022 in the state.

The Oil Patches on the Beaches of the Northeast Remind Us of the Disaster That Occurred in 2019
The oil patches on the beaches of the Northeast remind us of the disaster that occurred in 2019, when large volumes of crude oil reached vast areas of the Brazilian coast, and to this day the Navy has not been able to determine the source or find those responsible for the leaks.
According to the newspaper Folha, unlike what happened in 2019, the origin of this oil is compatible with the product extracted off the Brazilian coast. The finding points to three hypotheses: natural oil leak from the seabed, a process known as seepage; accident during drilling operations; or accident on an oil transport vessel.
The oil patches on Brazilian beaches have become recurrent. In 2020, oil patches were found on three beaches in Pernambuco and two in Alagoas. Last August, oil patches appeared on beaches in Fernando de Noronha. So far, the Brazilian Navy has not clarified the origin of the leaks, but the main hypothesis communicated to the press at the time pointed to discards from a vessel.
