Toyota Considers Launching GR Yaris in Brazil: 280 HP Sports Version May Arrive in the Country by 2026

Toyota is about to take a new step in the sports car segment in Brazil. The brand is studying the introduction of the GR Yaris, the 280 hp sports version of the European hatch, as one of the next bets from the Gazoo Racing division in the national market. This information was confirmed by company executives and indicates a possible arrival of the model in the country by 2026—although the launch date has not yet been officially defined.

The Toyota GR Yaris is currently sold in countries in Europe and Asia, and stands out for delivering excellent performance in a compact package. Equipped with a 1.6-liter turbo three-cylinder engine, the hatch was developed with a focus on rally competitions and bears the signature of the brand’s sports division. In Brazil, it may arrive to fill the gap left by the traditional Yaris family, discontinued last year.

GR Yaris May Repeat the Success of the GR Corolla

According to sources linked to Toyota, the good sales performance of the GR Corolla in the Brazilian market opened space for the arrival of another model from the automaker’s sports line. With a price above R$ 450,000, the Corolla GR has managed to attract a niche audience that seeks performance, exclusivity, and competition pedigree.

As a result, the GR Yaris in Brazil appears as a more “accessible” proposal within the GR universe. It is estimated that the new sports car will arrive in the country with prices between R$ 300,000 and R$ 400,000, depending on the equipment package chosen and the transmission configuration adopted.

Importation should be done directly from Japan, as is already the case with other performance models from Toyota.

Differentiated Platform and Focus on Performance

Unlike the Yaris sold in Brazil, which used the platform of the Etios, the European GR Yaris is built on the TNGA-B architecture, which is much more modern and adapted for sports applications. This means that the model shares practically no structural components with the Yaris that was available here—or even with the Yaris Cross, an SUV that will be launched soon in Brazil and utilizes the DNGA framework from Daihatsu.

The GR Yaris was developed with a focus on the tracks. The project was conceived as a basis for Toyota’s participation in the World Rally Championship (WRC). Therefore, the model adopts all-wheel drive, reinforced bodywork, and a mechanical setup designed to extract maximum performance in various driving conditions.

World’s Most Powerful Three-Cylinder Engine

One of the highlights of the GR Yaris 280 hp is its 1.6-liter turbo engine, with variable direct and indirect injection. It is one of the most powerful and largest displacement three-cylinder engines ever produced in series, which is also used in the GR Corolla (albeit with different calibration).

In the case of the GR Yaris, the engine delivers 280 horsepower and 39.7 kgfm of torque, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds. This is 24 hp less than the sporty Corolla, but with 2 kgfm more torque, which ensures agility and strength in acceleration and tight corners.

The compact hatch also features sporty suspension, high-performance brakes, and options for a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic, depending on the market.

Compact Dimensions and All-Wheel Drive are Highlights of the Toyota GR Yaris

Despite its impressive performance, the GR Yaris maintains compact hatch dimensions:

  • Length: 4.03 meters
  • Width: 1.82 meters
  • Height: 1.48 meters
  • Wheelbase: 2.56 meters

These dimensions ensure agility in urban stretches and stability in curves, complemented by permanent all-wheel drive, a rarity among sports cars of this size and price range.

This all-wheel drive is another point that reinforces the model’s competitive DNA. In combination with the turbo engine and sports transmission, the GR Yaris offers a driving experience that approaches that of higher category models.

Launch of the Toyota GR Yaris is Expected by 2026

Although the launch does not yet have a confirmed date, everything indicates that the GR Yaris will be launched in Brazil by 2026. The expectation is that Toyota will wait for the consolidation of the Yaris Cross in the national market before officially presenting the new sports model.

Behind the scenes, the brand is already working on demand projections and logistics feasibility tests to enable importation. The arrival of the GR Yaris may also depend on the behavior of the premium and sports vehicle market in the coming quarters, especially considering the dollar fluctuations and import costs.

Gazoo Racing Expands Presence in Brazil

With the success of the GR Corolla and the possible arrival of the GR Yaris in Brazil, the Gazoo Racing division is consolidating itself as a key player in Toyota’s strategy to position itself in the sports car market, even in emerging countries.

In addition to high-performance models, the GR line has been gaining space in intermediate versions, such as GR-S, aimed at consumers looking for a sporty experience, but with more accessible prices and maintenance.

Toyota is also considering expanding its GR line to SUVs and even electrified models in the coming years, demonstrating a long-term commitment to the segment.
