On the afternoon of May 15, 2024, an accident involving a road roller resulted in the tragic death of an employee of the State Water and Sewage Company of Rio de Janeiro (CEDAE) in Macaé. The accident occurred in the Granja dos Cavaleiros neighborhood and was captured by a surveillance camera. The video, obtained exclusively by Notícia Macaé, shows the moment the road roller descends out of control down a hill, colliding with a car and hitting the 61-year-old worker.

The CEDAE employee was performing maintenance work when he was struck by the runaway road roller. The machine, apparently without brakes, descended the hill at high speed and could not be controlled in time. According to witnesses, the road roller was in poor condition and lacked proper maintenance. “Machines without maintenance, sometimes, do not have a qualified operator. The cheap option can turn expensive,” commented a local resident. Another testimony emphasized the need for care with heavy equipment: “Machines that require maintenance or are defective should be transported with a tow truck or a flatbed trailer. It’s easy to investigate and find the guilty/responsible.”
The accident generated great emotion in the Macaé community. Residents and colleagues of the victim expressed sadness and indignation at the situation. “I imagine the despair of the person driving the vehicle. I don’t blame the victim; in a moment of despair, I would have the same reaction. Rushing into the house,” said one of the residents who witnessed the tragedy. The house hit by the road roller also suffered considerable damage.
