Program Aims to Repopulate Isolated Communities with Financial Incentives for Residents Willing to Take on the Challenge of Restoring Abandoned Properties

The government of Ireland is offering up to €84,000 — equivalent to about R$455,000 — for those who wish to live and renovate a house on a remote island off the country’s west coast. The incentive is part of the “Our Living Islands” program, launched to revitalize 23 inhabited islands that have been facing population exodus in recent decades.

The proposal is open to Irish citizens and foreigners, provided that the chosen property is turned into a primary residence for a minimum of 10 years. Candidates must renovate homes built before 2007 that have been unoccupied for at least two years.

Incentive Targets Abandoned Properties and Sustainable Repopulation

The grant amount ranges from €50,000 to €84,000, depending on the level of abandonment of the property. To be eligible, the house must be located on one of the program’s islands, such as Inishbofin, Aran, Clare, and Bere, known for their natural landscapes and tranquil lifestyles, far from the fast pace of large urban centers.

The project’s focus is to reverse population decline and promote local economic growth. According to the Department of Housing of Ireland, the 23 eligible islands housed just over 2,700 inhabitants in 2016. Since the launch of the program, 35 applications have been made — 22 of them approved by March 2025.

Simple Life, but With Strict Rules

For those who wish to live and renovate a house on a remote island, the Irish government imposes clear rules: the renovated property must be used as a permanent residence. Vacation homes or those rented short-term are excluded from the program. If the beneficiary decides to sell the property before five years, they must return the amount received to the local authority.

This measure is part of a national housing recovery policy initiated in 2023, aimed at small communities with low population density. In addition to the direct benefit to the resident, the initiative aims to boost commerce, sustainable tourism, and cultural preservation of the islands.

Stunning Landscapes, but Structural Challenges

The available properties require significant structural renovations. Many have been abandoned for years, with no immediate access to basic services. The decision to move requires planning, financial preparation, and adaptation to island lifestyles, where transportation, connectivity, and climate can be challenging.

On the other hand, the islands offer beaches, trails, preserved wildlife, and the silence of nature. Inis Mór, for example, was the setting for the Oscar-nominated film The Banshees of Inisherin. The Island of Bere attracts cyclists, birdwatchers, and botany enthusiasts.
