Mato Grosso Reveals Blue Pits, Canyons, and Spectacular Waterfalls, Attracting Visitors in Search of Natural Beauties Yet to Be Explored.
The municipality of Barra do Garças, in Mato Grosso, is rapidly transforming into a favorite destination among ecotourism lovers, thanks to its abundance of crystal-clear waters, flooded canyons, and spectacular rock formations. Despite still being relatively unknown at the national level, the city, located in the Araguaia Valley region, about 500 km from the capital Cuiabá, stands out for the unique beauty of its attractions. A team from the Rolê Família channel spent eight days exploring the region and confirmed that the location has undoubtedly become one of their favorite destinations in the country, highlighting a vast tourism potential.
With approximately 69,000 inhabitants, the logistics of accessing Barra do Garças is unique, with the nearest major city airport located in Goiânia (GO), about five hours by car. The eight-day experience reported included the best of Barra do Garças but also tours through the canyons of the Rio Araguaia, the mystical Serra do Roncador, and the waterfalls of Nova Xavantina, offering a complete overview of the area’s natural wealth.
The Visual Impact of Crystal-Clear Waters
The natural attractions of Barra do Garças are marked by the impressive crystal clarity of its waters, a decisive factor for the experience of visitors.

The itinerary began with a visit to the Azul and Perdida Waterfalls, located in Recanto da Serra. After a moderately challenging trail (about 6 km), Cachoeira Azul surprised with a waterfall of 45 meters high and a pool of crystal-clear blue water, surrounded by rocky cliffs and dense vegetation. The impact of the place was immediate and described as a “little piece of paradise” and one of the most beautiful waterfalls known in Brazil, according to the account from Rolê Família. Cachoeira Perdida, in turn, complements the visit with a smaller but equally crystal-clear pool, allowing visitors to enjoy a natural hydro massage closer to the waterfall.
Another point of incomparable beauty is the Santuário das Araras, at Estância Favo de Mel. Although the 11 km trail is considered moderate to challenging, the reward is a magical place: a pool with crystal-clear blue water surrounded by enormous cliffs, with two springs and the presence of macaws flying overhead. The team from Rolê Família noted that the Sanctuary exceeded all expectations and immediately made its list of the most incredible and beautiful places in Brazil, reinforcing the city’s appeal for those seeking unique beauty.
Trail, Adventure, and Mysticism
Besides the most famous waterfalls, Barra do Garças offers routes that combine adventure, unique landscapes, and the folklore of the Serra do Roncador.
On the third day, floating in Azul das Águas (Recanto da Serra) impressed with the color and clarity of the water amidst the canyons, with the access trail varying in difficulty depending on the use of a 4×4 vehicle. The tour includes stops at Cachoeira do Portal Encantado and Cachoeira da Conquista, whose pool, with green water that “seems to glow”, was described as “absurdly beautiful.” Other attractions, such as the Complexo da Miragem and the Vale das Águas, although less known, were praised for their beauty and exclusivity, allowing visitors to enjoy the blue and green pools with less tourist flow, even on holiday weekends. For the team from Rolê Família, the mix between famous attractions and lesser-known sites is essential in planning an itinerary through the region.
The region is also rich in mystical history, especially due to the legendary Serra do Roncador. According to the guide Ralf from Roncador Expedições, the mountain range is sought after for ufotourism due to numerous reports of sightings of lights and for mystical tourism, being considered a portal of energy concentration or a “chakra of the planet.” Additionally, the area is linked to the famous legend of Colonel Fawcett, the British explorer who disappeared in 1925 while searching for the legendary City Z. Fawcett is seen as the inspiration for the character Indiana Jones, and the legend of his quest for an underground civilization attracts researchers and curious individuals, as seen in the statue erected in his honor in the center of Barra do Garças.
Rafting and Ideal Time to Visit
Beyond the trails, the Rio Araguaia offers rafting as an alternative for adventure and contemplation.
The activity, which covers about 17 km in 5 to 6 hours in the canyon region, offers adrenaline rapids and the opportunity to enjoy the scenery, observing the division between the states of Goiás (municipality of Baliza) and Mato Grosso (municipality of Ribeirãozinho). The route also reveals natural pools of clear water, surprising visitors with a beauty that intensifies along the way, culminating in the narrow and geologically impressive “canalão.” Roncador Expedições, in partnership with Trilhas do Serrado, guided the tour, ensuring safety and support for visitors.
It is crucial to highlight the timing aspect. According to guide Ralf (Roncador Expedições), the ideal time to enjoy the maximum clarity of the waters is between May and September, which corresponds to the dry season in the Cerrado. Although the months of April and October are also good options, the rainy season, which runs from November to March, can make the waters cloudy or murky, depending on the intensity of the precipitation. Therefore, strategic planning of the trip is essential to ensure the ideal experience, especially considering that even with eight days of itinerary, the team from Rolê Família felt that there is still much more to explore.
What Is the Next Step for Adventure Tourism?
Barra do Garças, with its glowing water pools and the mysticism of Serra do Roncador, has established itself as a favorite destination for those seeking untouched natural beauties and challenging itineraries. The experience documented by Rolê Família shows a city that offers a combination of ecotourism and adventure, with the requirement for hiring licensed guides (such as Roncador Expedições), ensuring safety and local knowledge.
