Hydroelectricity as an Economic Engine
During the opening of the 14th edition of the Paraguay Brazil Expo, Enio Verri, the Brazilian General Director of Itaipu Binacional, highlighted the vital importance of hydroelectricity in stimulating the industrial sector. The event, which is being held in Luque, the metropolitan area of Asunción, Paraguay, runs from September 21 to 22.
Verri, alongside his Paraguayan counterpart, Justo Zacarías Irún, addressed the theme “Renewable Energies: Itaipu’s Contribution to Sustainable Development in Brazil and Paraguay.” Among the guests were Pedro Alliana, Vice President of Paraguay, and Antonio Marcondes de Carvalho, the Brazilian Ambassador to Paraguay.

The largest South American oil company, Petrobras, is preparing for a historic leap in production with new FPSO platforms and the expansion of refining — projects that could add up to 900,000 barrels per day and strengthen Brazil’s energy security.
“We are proud of our presence here, as it marks half a century of fruitful collaboration between Brazil and Paraguay,” stated Verri. Zacarías Irún added that Itaipu is proof of the successful integration between the two countries.
The Positive Impact of Industry Supported by Hydroelectricity
Verri, who is also an economist, emphasized that the industry, powered by energy generated at Itaipu, is a significant source of employment and innovation in Brazil. He cited impressive numbers: 21.2% of formal jobs in Brazil are in the industry, which also contributes 23.9% to national GDP. Furthermore, the industry is responsible for a huge share of exports and investments in research and development.
Energy Security and Sustainability
In terms of energy capacity, Itaipu shines with its 14,000 MW, providing 8.06% of Brazil’s electricity and an impressive 86.3% of Paraguay’s electricity. “If Itaipu didn’t exist, we would be burning 480 thousand barrels of fuel per day, with catastrophic damage to the environment,” emphasized Zacarías Irún.
Beyond producing clean and sustainable energy, Itaipu is also committed to developing renewable sources such as green hydrogen and biogas. It aligns with the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.
Future Innovations and Environmental Impact
Verri revealed that studies are underway to utilize the water surface of the Itaipu reservoir to install photovoltaic solar panels. “We are approaching this innovation with the utmost care to ensure it is environmentally sustainable,” he said.
Beyond Energy: A Space for Business and Culture
The Paraguay Brazil Expo is not just an energy event; over 350 companies from various sectors are participating, and the expected business volume is around US$ 180 million. The program also includes business rounds, startup presentations, lectures, and cultural events.
The official Expo website, organized by the Paraguay Brazil Chamber of Commerce, offers more information and can be accessed here.
Itaipu’s participation in the Paraguay Brazil Expo reinforces the vision that hydroelectricity is more than just a source of energy; it is a pillar for the sustainable and economic development of nations.
