Volkswagen is preparing for a major launch in the Brazilian market.
After much speculation, the automaker finally confirmed that it is developing a new midsize pickup to directly compete with models such as Fiat Toro, Ford Maverick, Renault Oroch, and Chevrolet Montana.
The model will be produced at the São José dos Pinhais (PR) plant, a location that recently celebrated the milestone of 500,000 units manufactured of the SUV T-Cross.

Expectations for this new pickup have been high, as Volkswagen had kept the project under wraps until now.
Internally code-named Udara, the pickup is expected to launch between the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026.
Although the Tarok concept was presented in 2018 as a possibility, sources connected to the company dismiss this name for the final version.
New Volkswagen Pickup: What We Know So Far
The confirmation of the new pickup came from César Drazul, head of the Volkswagen factory in Paraná.
During the celebration of half a million units of the T-Cross, he revealed that the company will allocate part of the investments in the industrial plant to enable the new pickup.
“The investments in the Paraná factory will also be used for the production of an unprecedented pickup for the Brazilian market and export. It will be an incredible model that promises to revolutionize the segment“, said Drazul.
The pickup will be based on the MQB A0 platform, the same used in the Polo, Virtus, and T-Cross models. This means it will share several structural components, including suspension, brakes, and part of the bodywork.
Volkswagen’s goal is to offer a vehicle that combines drivability similar to that of an SUV with the robustness of a pickup, making it an attractive option for both urban use and light work and leisure activities.

Engine Option Is Still a Mystery
One of the most anticipated aspects of the new Volkswagen pickup is the mechanical setup.
Currently, the automaker is working with engines known in the market, such as the 1.4 TSI with 150 hp and the 1.0 TSI with 128 hp.
However, the trend is for the new pickup to receive an electrified engine, possibly a mild hybrid system, gradually replacing the 1.4 TSI.
If this materializes, Volkswagen would follow a strategy similar to that of other automakers that are electrifying their fleets to meet new environmental and fuel consumption demands.
As for the 1.0 TSI, while efficient, it may not be the most suitable option for a vehicle of this size.
Billion-Dollar Investments and New Projects
Volkswagen had already announced an investment of R$ 3 billion in the São José dos Pinhais factory, an amount that will be used not only for the production of the new pickup but also for other initiatives.
Among them, the transfer of part of the production of the Virtus to Paraná stands out, which will help make space for a new model at the São Bernardo do Campo (SP) plant.
There is still no information on what vehicle will be produced at the São Paulo plant, but speculation suggests it could be an SUV or even an electrified model, following the trend of electrification in the automotive industry.
The Challenge of Competing with the Fiat Toro
The new Volkswagen pickup will enter one of the most competitive segments in Brazil.
Since its launch, the Fiat Toro has dominated the midsize pickup market, surpassing competitors such as Renault Oroch and Chevrolet Montana.
With the arrival of the Ford Maverick and the trend of growth in this niche, Volkswagen’s new bet will need to bring differentiators to win over consumers.
One of the advantages might be the construction quality of the MQB A0 platform, which offers greater structural rigidity and better dynamic behavior.
Additionally, if Volkswagen chooses to include an electrified option, it could attract a crowd interested in energy efficiency and lower fuel consumption.
When Will the Pickup Be Launched?
Although Volkswagen has not disclosed an exact date, the expectation is that the model will be introduced between the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026.
The Udara project is in an advanced stage of development, and road tests are expected to begin later this year.
Brazilian consumers can expect a modern pickup equipped with cutting-edge technology and designed to meet both urban demand and the needs of a public looking for a versatile vehicle.
The question remains whether Volkswagen’s new pickup will be able to dethrone the Fiat Toro and carve out its space in the market.
With a well-defined strategy, high investment, and a solid foundation, the German brand has a good chance of competing in this highly contested segment.
