Seeking to Stay Ahead of Its Competitors, Volkswagen Closed a New Partnership with CBMM to Produce the First Vehicle Powered by Niobium Batteries.

In the race among automakers to make electric cars more viable for consumers, Volkswagen Trucks and Buses and CBMM have struck an agreement to advance in the competition. The multinational manufacturer and the company famous for producing items containing niobium have joined forces in the development of the first Brazilian vehicle powered by niobium batteries. Thus, with the agreement, Volkswagen will be the first automaker in the world to test the batteries produced by CBMM in partnership with Toshiba.

The agreement stipulates that CBMM will supply Volkswagen with batteries to be manufactured alongside its vehicles at its Resende factory.

As soon as the prototype has progressed, the new vehicle with niobium batteries is expected to undergo continuous testing, evolving over hours, until it reaches the 24-hour operating test. With these tests, CBMM expects to have a fully prepared niobium battery ready for commercialization in the automotive market by early 2023.

In total, CBMM anticipates producing 5,000 cells, in agreement with Toshiba, to be delivered for testing later this year. In addition to the multinational, CBMM also expects to send the cells to another 25 automakers that manufacture electric vehicles.

CBMM and Volkswagen Executives Speak Out

According to CBMM’s vice president, Ricardo Lima, for the first time the company is installing this solution, which due to the use of niobium oxide in the battery anode, will allow the vehicle to have ultra-fast charging, taking less than 10 minutes.

Moreover, it offers greater durability, lifespan, and safety. Not to mention the autonomy of vehicles that reaches up to 350 km, very close to that of combustion engines. To achieve all these benefits, Volkswagen will create and test vehicles fully adapted with the new batteries at its Development Center.

According to the president of VWCO in Brazil, CBMM will provide the niobium batteries, and Volkswagen will test and verify the efficiency of the product, as well as its operationalization and productivity in real uses. During this period, Volkswagen will monitor the data in real time, install the ultra-fast charging infrastructure, and prepare the entire supply chain with driver training.

Investment Plan That May Reach R$ 2 Billion

The multinational Volkswagen has not disclosed the value of the investment in the partnership with CBMM, but states that the agreement is part of a R$ 2 billion investment plan, which will be applied over the next five years.

For the automaker, the main attribute of electric vehicles lies in their efficiency. According to Roberto, the company has many routes being studied for improving sustainability, such as ethanol, fuel cells, and CNG.

A study has also been carried out that proves that the electric vehicle is the most productive among all alternatives. This is because, of the energy generated from sustainable sources like solar and wind, up to the charger that will be used by the cars, there is a 75% efficiency, while fuel cells only reach about 25%.
