Volkswagen Multinational Is Not At All Satisfied With The Electric Copy Of The Beetle Made Outrageously By Great Wall Motors

The Chinese industry has yet to abandon some old habits, and the Volkswagen multinational is not at all flattered by the electric car manufacturer ORA, which is part of the Great Wall Motors group. The brand presented a clone of the Beetle at the Shanghai Auto Show. Named ORA Punk Cat, the vehicle shares the same traits as the iconic car from the VW automaker.

It is clear that ORA took inspiration—if not to say blatantly copied—the traits of the Volkswagen Beetle in its new Punk Cat. The hood with a curved design, rounded headlights, and the rear section design, complete with oval taillights, evoke the old bug.

The interior of the ORA Punk Cat also resembles the Beetle, as it features a three-spoke steering wheel and instruments and gauges in circular formats. Despite the retro vibe, the interior offers a multimedia screen and a floating center console.

However, the creation of this car with a “time machine feeling,” as ORA itself described it, did not please Volkswagen at all.

Volkswagen Plans To Take Legal Action Against The Punk Cat

To Carscoops, the Volkswagen AG group stated: “regarding any utility model violations or design rights of Volkswagen AG, we reserve the right to take all necessary legal action.”

It is worth noting that Volkswagen ended the production of the Beetle (the real one) in 2019, with no plans to recreate it in the future. What is known is that VW registered the e-Beetle trademark, allowing for the possibility of the model’s return.

It Is Not The First Time The Chinese Have Created Clones

Last year, Chinese brand Wey wasted no time and ‘cloned’ the Ford Bronco just five days after the launch of the SUV from the American brand in 2020. Wey is also part of the Great Wall Motors, the same company responsible for creating the electric ‘Beetle.’

The Chinese brand Foton Big General also presented a identical copy of the Ford F-150 Raptor pickup last year. See below the ‘Chinese invention.’

After Ending Up! Production, Volkswagen Places Over 2000 Employees From Its SP Factory On Collective Vacation

After the departure of the major automaker Ford from the country, removing the EcoSport SUV and the Ka family from its lineup, the German multinational Volkswagen announced last Wednesday (04/07) the end of Up! production at its factory in Taubaté, placing more than 2200 employees from its SP factory on collective vacation between May 3 and 12.

After stopping Up! production, the German multinational Volkswagen’s factory in Taubaté (SP), may also cease production of the Gol, Voyage and Fox. These vehicles are also under the automaker’s scrutiny, after many years on the road.

Until the German company decides whether it will also withdraw these vehicles from the lineup in Brazil and produce a new vehicle at the factory, which has not yet been confirmed by the automaker, the Volkswagen factory in Taubaté will continue producing two models: Gol and Voyage.

In March, 11,000 Volkswagen cars were registered among Gol, Up! and Voyage, according to data from Fenabrave. The Gol was the third most registered car in the country, with 6,800 units; the Voyage had 3,600 registrations and the Up! only 563.
