Gestamp, Supplier for Multinationals Volkswagen, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Fiat, and General Motors, Reveals Surplus of 200 Employees and Is Forced to Lay Off Employees in Taubaté; Union Negotiates Lay-Off at the Facility.

Gestamp, a supplier that produces parts for global automotive giants Volkswagen, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Fiat, and General Motors, laid off 60 employees at its Taubaté facility last Wednesday (3). The company had announced at the end of October that it had a surplus of 200 employees at the plant due to industry shutdowns.

Most automakers have halted production due to a shortage of semiconductors. As a result, the company claims that one shift of production at the factory has also been affected. The Metalworkers’ Union is negotiating with the company and proposing lay-off at the facility to maintain jobs.

Currently, Gestamp, Supplier for Multinationals Volkswagen, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Fiat, and General Motors, Employs 1,200 Workers in Taubaté

The Metalworkers’ Union discussed the matter with workers in a meeting on October 24. At the time, it was approved that Sindmetau would seek alternatives with the company to try to avoid layoffs. The union reports that it has been meeting with the company to discuss measures to be presented to workers.

“It will be inevitable not to have layoffs due to demand in the two largest volumes of the factory, which are for parts for Volkswagen and General Motors. We are discussing a smaller number of layoffs and implementing lay-off as early as November,” said Santos, who is also an employee of Gestamp.

The company currently employs 1,200 workers in Taubaté. The factory currently operates in three shifts from Monday to Friday, but the pace is expected to slow down in the coming days, the union representative reported. Regarding the implementation of a Voluntary Dismissal Program (PDV) at the facility, he stated that the company, unlike the automakers, does not have the funds for it.

Both automakers, General Motors and Volkswagen, maintain production units in the region where Gestamp is located. The VW plant in Taubaté has implemented a series of shutdowns and production adjustments throughout the year due to the lack of chips in its lines.

Gestamp Stated That Due to Shutdowns from Semiconductor Shortages, Which Affect the Entire World, the Company Needed to Make Adjustments to the Factory’s Workforce.

“The shortage of semiconductors is a global problem that affects the different markets where vehicles are produced and does not only affect our industry. At Gestamp Brazil, we are adapted to the production needs of our clients, as well as prepared to take the necessary flexibility measures.

In this case, and to adapt to the current market situation, it was necessary to make an adjustment to the factory’s workforce. Just as we are in constant communication with our clients, we are also in constant communication with the unions. This relationship helps us maintain the required production levels with minimal impact on the workforce,” says the statement.

In 2020, the company adopted a temporary suspension of contracts and salary reductions for 1,200 employees. At the time, Gestamp claimed to have been impacted by the shutdown of production during Covid-19 restrictions. Even after the measures adopted, the company decided to close one shift, resulting in 164 layoffs.
