Wartsila Will Convert An Old Brazilian Diesel Power Plant To Natural Gas
The contract with the Amazonas Energy Generator (GERA Amazonas) was signed by Wartsila in September 2020, but there were still a few details for the conversion of the new natural gas plant to happen and create new jobs. The plant currently operates five Wartsila gas-diesel engines, which will be converted into natural gas engines, allowing an increase in energy generation capacity from the current 85 to 91 MW.

Wartsila Claims The Conversion Of The Plant To Natural Gas Will Reduce Carbon Levels
The use of 100% natural gas fuel will result in a reduction of 35,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCDE) per year, equivalent to the pollution of about 7,600 cars. In addition, particulate matter (PM) emissions will also be significantly reduced. The conversion is scheduled to start in May 2021 and be completed by spring 2022.
An existing Wartsila operation and maintenance contract has also been updated to match the scope and responsibilities applicable to the new engine technology. The factory, which opened in 2006, has been operated and maintained by Wartsila for 12 years. The updated agreement covers the management team, the operations team, a dedicated on-site maintenance team, as well as on-site training and safety services. To ensure the availability and reliability of the plant’s performance, remote support will be provided from Wartsila’s Experience Center in Manaus with an Optimized Maintenance Plan and technical guidance.

This recent third project in Brazil adds to the more than 100 engines worldwide, representing a total of over 1.2 GWe, that Wartsila has already converted to natural gas. As with the previous ones, this conversion will improve the plant’s performance, reduce its environmental impact, and increase its reliability and flexibility, while lowering operational costs.
