The Largest FPSO Platform in Brazil — Manufactured by Modec for Equinor, Destined for the Pre-salt of the Santos Basin, Will Have 140 Electric Motors from WEG

The first Brazilian wind turbine, in production by WEG — one of the world’s largest manufacturers of electrical equipment, is in the final stages of development and certification. According to the newspaper Valor, the equipment has seen strong demand in the market, with guaranteed sales until the end of 2022. The announcement was made by the company last Friday, June 4.

Manufactured by WEG, the machine has a power of 4.2 megawatts (MW) and was developed by Aneel’s research and development program, with participation from Engie and Celesc, and investments exceeding R$ 200 million.

Since signing the first contract in early 2020, WEG has secured orders with three additional generators and is booked for production until the end of next year. The company also plans to increase its production capacity from 8 to 12 generators per month by December 2022.

The Brazilian Company Reported a Net Profit of R$ 764.2 Million in the First Quarter, Growth of 73.7%

The electrical equipment manufacturer WEG exceeded profit and revenue consensus in the first quarter, reflecting improvements in operating margins, gains in scale, and efficient capital use amid a slow recovery in activity following the coronavirus pandemic crisis.

The Brazilian company reported a 73.7% growth in net profit for the first quarter of 2021, compared to the same period in 2020, reaching R$ 764.2 million.

WEG attributed its positive performance to the recovery of demand for short-cycle equipment in the domestic market, especially in the areas of industrial electromechanical equipment, commercial motors, and appliances. The company observed an improvement in demand in the foreign market, mainly for short-cycle products, “showing signs of a broader recovery of the global economy.”

About 40 medium voltage electric motors, with powers reaching up to 13,400 kW, plus 100 low voltage electric motors and five medium voltage frequency inverters (three of which have a nominal power of 11,723 kW) will be supplied by the multinational WEG to equip the largest oil and gas platform in Brazil.

WEG is already manufacturing the equipment at its factory located in Jaraguá do Sul (SC). The electric motors and inverters will be supplied through compressor and pump manufacturing clients from Europe and Asia, and will operate the equipment in the Bacalhau field, in the pre-salt of the Santos Basin.

The Largest Transformer Produced by WEG Will Leave the SC Factory in April, Heading to the African Continent

The Brazilian giant WEG built, at its factory in Blumenau, SC, its largest transformer. The equipment, weighing 348 tons each, will be incorporated into the power transmission electrical system in the southern African continent, providing reliability in energy supply and directly contributing to the development of the local economy.

The first unit was shipped in early April of this year, and the second in May, ahead of the contractual deadlines, with the complex logistics of transportation to the final destination estimated to take 60 days.

In the African continent, in addition to other important operations, WEG also has two manufacturing units for transformers, both located near the city of Johannesburg, South Africa, through which it supplies the local market by producing transformers with voltage class up to 145 kV.

“WEG reinforces its position in the local market with the timely delivery of these 500 MVA transformers, necessary to alleviate the energy scarcity experienced in the region. The work carried out, involving participation from our South Africa team, reaffirms WEG’s commitment to the development of our employees and skills transfer, and consequently to the country’s development,” states Jan-Frederik Viljoen, WEG’s chief executive for the transformer units in South Africa.
