The Construction of 50 Ships and a Contract for the Supply of Up to 100 Drilling Platforms for the Implementation of the Project Are Planned
The national oil company of Russia has initiated the construction of a major project in the Arctic. There is still a thick layer of sea ice in the Yenisei Bay, but the ships have moved to the coast of the Taymyr Peninsula and have unloaded about 20,000 tons of construction materials. The project is expected to create tens of thousands of additional jobs. More than 400,000 people will need to be attracted for the development of the fields. Additionally, 50 ships of various classes, including tankers, gas locomotives, and support vessels, are planned to be built for the implementation of the Vostok Oil project. A long-term contract has also been signed for the supply of up to 100 domestically produced drilling platforms, which will be used in the project’s fields.

Construction of the Largest Oil Terminal in Russia in the Arctic Begins, Promising Tens of Thousands of Jobs
Shipments to the remote site mark the beginning of construction of what will ultimately become the largest oil terminal in Russia in the Arctic. Among the materials are heavy machinery, housing modules, communication equipment, and other goods necessary for constructing a project work camp.
Ship tracking services have shown, in recent days, at least two vessels docked at the coast of the remote peninsula. Among them are the Mikhail Somov and the Akademik Tryoshnikov.

On-site, there is also a group of construction specialists from the Joint Energy Construction Corporation (OEK), informs Rosneft.
The OEK specializes in large construction projects in the Russian energy sector. It has been heavily involved in several nuclear energy projects, as well as hydropower projects, including in Crimea.
According to Rosneft, the Sever Bay terminal has been fully approved by the authorities, and engineers will soon begin hydraulic engineering work in the nearby waters and construction of port facilities on the coast.
Vostok Oil Is Among the Largest Oil Projects Currently Developed Worldwide

The terminal is a key component of Vostok Oil, and the large project promises to export up to 25 million tons of oil by the year 2024. By 2030, the volumes will rise to 100 million tons per year. It is expected to be exported both westward to European markets and eastward to the Asia-Pacific region.
Rosneft is in the process of constructing the first ten ice-class tankers to transport to the Sever Bay terminal. The ships are being built at the company’s own Zvezda Yard in Vladivostok.
The oil company argues that Vostok Oil is “environmentally friendly,” and has “a very small hydrocarbon footprint.” Furthermore, the oil facilities will supposedly be powered by wind turbines and associated gas.
Rosneft and its leader Igor Sechin have repeatedly promised President Putin that Vostok Oil will help increase shipments along the Northern Sea Route to 80 million tons by 2024, the ambitious target set by Putin in his so-called May Decrees of 2018.
Vostok Oil is believed to be among the largest oil projects currently developed worldwide. The resource base is estimated at more than 6 billion tons of low-sulfur oil.
Mega Oil Exploration Project Will Create 400,000 Jobs
More than 400,000 jobs are expected to be created during the construction process, which includes three new airports, two marine terminals, 15 work camps, and several facilities on the Yenisei River.
Vostok Oil is not the only major industrial project under development in the far north of Taymyr. Earlier this year, the company Severnaya Zvezda sent several shipments of construction materials to the site for its new designed coal terminal. The infrastructure object will be located in the Yenisei Bay, just a few kilometers south of Rosneft’s Sever Bay.
