Deep update of the Argentine medium tank expands operational capacity, guarantees logistical autonomy, and keeps the project active until 2026
Argentina stands out as the only country in Latin America that manufactures tanks, while keeping the TAM 2C-A2 in operation since 2024. This advancement consolidates a strategic position by preserving and evolving a locally developed military system.
A significant evolution in the defense sector was recently confirmed by the Argentine government.
On December 20, 2024, the first modernized units of the Argentine Medium Tank (TAM) were delivered, according to official data.
In total, 10 vehicles updated to the 2C-A2 standard were incorporated into the Army, allowing for the formation of the first complete squadron. The project has ceased to be experimental and now represents effective operational capability.

Technical investigation and project evolution over time
The TAM was developed in the late 1970s, with the aim of meeting the demands of the Argentine Army. In that context, the system represented an advancement aligned with international standards.
As the years passed, technological advancements rendered the original model outdated. Therefore, in May 2023, the modernized version TAM 2C-A2 was presented at the Expo Ejército.
The update was planned as a complete overhaul of the system. This means that it was not just about superficial adjustments, but rather a broad structural and technological modernization.
Main technical improvements of the TAM 2C-A2
The new version incorporates improvements that enhance combat performance. The tank now operates with greater precision and efficiency in different scenarios.
Among the main advancements, the following stand out:
- Update of the turret and the main 105 mm gun
- Improvement in night vision systems
- More advanced computerized fire control
- Ability to operate in smoke, fog, and low visibility environments
- Adjustments to the chassis to maintain structural integrity
According to the technical specifications from Expo Ejército, the model features:
- 720 horsepower diesel engine
- Maximum speed of up to 75 km/h
- Operational range of about 550 kilometers
- FN MAG 7.62 mm machine gun as secondary armament
- Crew composed of four soldiers
The system retains its original base but incorporates significant improvements in performance and operation.
First operational squadron marks a new phase
The delivery of the units in Boulogne, Buenos Aires province, marked a decisive point. The first complete squadron equipped with the TAM 2C-A2 has been officially established.
According to the Argentine government, this stage consolidated the transition of the project to real use. So far, this remains the only officially confirmed delivery.
Continuity of the program and planning until 2026
Information released by the specialized site Zona Militar in March 2026 indicates that the program remains active. The TAM 2C-A2 continues to be one of the main modernization lines of the Argentine Army.
Among the points defining this phase, the following stand out:
- Program under development with allocated budget
- One squadron already operational and planning for a second
- Integration between turret modernization and chassis recovery
- Estimated lifespan extension between 20 and 30 years
- Application of the “modernity cores” concept for gradual evolution
An interview cited by Zona Militar indicates that the goal includes mastering the entire logistical and maintenance cycle. This movement seeks to reduce external dependence and increase autonomy.
Local production and strategic autonomy
The program is not limited to the modernization of the vehicle. It involves a broader effort to ensure technical support within the Army itself.
Updates and maintenance are carried out in military facilities. This model strengthens the operational and industrial autonomy of the country.
Comparison with other projects in Latin America
Other countries have attempted to develop similar projects, but few have advanced to the operational phase.
In Brazil, for example, the EE-T1 Osório, developed by Engesa, showed good performance in tests.
Even so, the project did not advance to mass production and was ultimately canceled.
This scenario highlights that the challenge lies not only in development but in the production and integration of the system.
A project that remains active over the decades
The regional scenario shows few similar examples. Argentina maintains a differential by developing, producing, and modernizing its own tank over decades.
The TAM 2C-A2 represents industrial continuity and real operational capability, something uncommon in the region.
In light of this consistent advancement, willother Latin American countries achieve this level of military autonomy?
