Mark Zuckerberg Minimizes Rumors About Bunker in Hawaii and Claims That Subterranean Structure on His Farm Is Just Shelter with Storage and Passage Ways Between Buildings.

During a recent interview, Mark Zuckerberg addressed the rumors about the construction of a subterranean bunker on his property in Hawaii.

The CEO of Meta commented on the issue on the podcast “This Past Weekend.” Contrary to what circulates in memes and reports, he denies having created a complete survival shelter.

There’s this whole story about me building a bunker. But it’s more like an underground storage space,” Zuckerberg said. “It’s like a tunnel that leads to another building.

The statement was an attempt to downplay reports that the businessman was preparing for a potential apocalyptic scenario. Nonetheless, documents and official records show that the project in Kauai is of significant scale.

Billion-Dollar Construction in Hawaii

Mark Zuckerberg began acquiring land on the island of Kauai over ten years ago. In 2014, he shelled out US$ 100 million for about 750 acres. In 2021, he paid another US$ 53 million for another 600 acres in the same region.

According to Wired magazine, a subterranean structure of 1.50 square kilometers is being built on the property called Ko’olau Ranch.

The final value, including building permits and land costs, would reach US$ 270 million.

The publication also revealed that the project includes two mansions connected by a tunnel. This same tunnel would provide access to the underground shelter, which would have communal areas, a technical room, and an emergency exit via stairs, in addition to a concrete-reinforced door.

Project Appears in Official Documents

In December 2023, the local site Hawaii News Now obtained government documents that confirm the existence of an underground construction on the property.

According to the material, it is a “storm shelter” with almost 4,500 square feet (1.37 km) — equivalent to an NBA basketball court.

Also in December, Zuckerberg gave an interview to Bloomberg and reinforced that the construction is being misinterpreted. “It’s just a basement, a small shelter,” he said.

There’s a lot of storage space. Call it what you want, a hurricane shelter or whatever. But I think they exaggerated a lot, as if the whole ranch were a doomsday bunker. That’s not true.”

Humorous Response on Social Media

In January 2024, Zuckerberg posted a video on his Instagram account mocking the situation. The recording shows his wife, Priscilla Chan, catching him in a locked environment with an electronic keyboard. The place resembles a movie theater, where he appears playing video games with friends.

In the caption, he wrote: “When your wife catches you in the ‘bunker’ playing video games.” The post was seen as a way to lighten the mood surrounding the construction.

Cattle Raising and Agricultural Production

In addition to the subterranean structure, Zuckerberg has invested in cattle ranching on the property. He informed on Instagram that he started raising cattle at Ko’olau Ranch with the aim of producing “the highest quality meat in the world.”

The cows are of the wagyu and angus breeds. They are fed macadamia meal and drink beer produced on the farm.

The diet was explained by the businessman: “As a human, what do you consume the most? Beer and nuts. Nuts are dense, beer opens the appetite. That’s what we want: the most nutritious and dense food.”

Zuckerberg also highlighted that he has no commercial interest. “We’re not doing this to sell. The idea is just to produce the best possible meat.”

Other Activities on the Property

In addition to cattle ranching, the land is used for other purposes. According to a spokesperson for the couple, the property also houses organic ginger and turmeric plantations. There is also a nursery dedicated to the recovery of native plants from the island.

The couple also works in partnership with wildlife conservation specialists. The goal is to protect endangered species and promote the preservation of local ecosystems.

The spokesperson stated that less than 1% of the total area has been developed. Most of the land remains dedicated to agriculture, environmental preservation, open areas, and cattle raising.

Commitment to Preservation

According to the spokesperson, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan value the time spent with family on the ranch and in the local community.

Upon acquiring the property, they canceled a pre-existing agreement that would have allowed the construction of up to 80 luxury houses on site.

“The intent is to maintain the natural beauty of the ranch,” said the spokesperson. “They are committed to environmental conservation and responsible land use.”
