The government of Bahia announced this Friday (28) the signing of a letter of intent for the construction of three electric vehicle factories with BYD Auto, a subsidiary of BYD, a Chinese multinational technology company. Chassis for electric buses and trucks, as well as electric and hybrid passenger cars, will be produced at the company’s new facilities in the state.
If everything goes as planned, the deployment of all units will begin in June 2023. It is expected that two of them will be completed in September 2024, with operations starting in October. The third is expected to be completed by the end of the same year and will begin operations the following year, in January 2025.
BYD Electric Car Factories Will Generate Many Internship and Job Opportunities in Bahia
Although the contract was signed on Thursday (27), the government of Bahia did not make it public until the following day. It is expected that an investment of R$ 3 billion in the establishment of the factories in Bahia will be made. The estimate is that this will generate more than 1,200 direct jobs over the implementation period. One of BYD’s obligations in the project will be to join the First Job Project, a state program to promote the First Professional Experience, which includes Internship, Apprenticeship, and Formal Employment.

Largest public charging network in Brazil: BYD reaches 125 fast chargers and accelerates national expansion of electric mobility.
According to the protocol, the first phase of the project is the installation of a chemical plant for processing lithium and iron phosphate. This unit will use lithium extracted right here in Brazil as inputs. Concurrently with the development in the chemical sector, a chassis factory will be built for the production of electric buses and trucks. The production of electric buses will primarily serve the demand from clients in the northern and northeastern regions of Brazil.
BYD agreed to assume a number of necessary equivalents, one of which is to produce a comprehensive business strategy that is subject to State approval. Regarding the production process, the corporation needs to stimulate the formation and qualification of specialized labor, mostly local workforce.
As Part of the Agreement, BYD Will Hire Local Companies and Workforce Necessary for the Implementation of the Factories
Additionally, it is mandatory to inform the Secretary of Economic Development about the current situation of the company and the forecast for deployment semi-annually after the signing of the protocol and until the start of operations of the industrial units.
To deepen the productive chain in the state, BYD must prioritize the hiring of companies based in Bahia to carry out the works, hire services, and acquire the necessary inputs for the implementation and operation of the venture. This includes hiring local suppliers and disclosing the complete list of services to be contracted and inputs to be purchased.
