With a strategy focused on long-term solutions, employee well-being becomes a fundamental priority.

One of the main initiatives in this regard is to promote the quality of life of employees, seeking a better balance between personal and professional life. This is achieved through the implementation of policies that increase psychological monitoring and physical support, making it clear that the health and integral development of employees are non-negotiable. Continuous training programs and more flexible working hours have been a crucial part of these actions, demonstrating that the sector recognizes the interdependence between employee well-being and operational success.

Importance of Employee Well-Being

A emotional health The psychological well-being of employees is a topic of great relevance today, requiring constant reassessments at both the individual and organizational levels. Companies must understand that these issues often transcend the personal sphere and end up being reflected in the work environment.

While many industries offer attractive salaries and opportunities for professional growth, if there are no actions that ensure a good quality of life and a work-life balance, the career may not be worth it. With the rise of the offshore sector, the demand for labor has grown significantly, opening up more job opportunities.

Challenges of Embedded Work

Working offshore, in addition to offering high salaries, requires much more than technical skills. 'High salaries are a big draw in this sector, but it is vital to consider the working conditions required,' says Glaucia Maciel, HR Director at Seagems, a Brazilian company specializing in subsea engineering solutions. 'Working offshore is more than just a job; it is a lifestyle.'

The offshore sector has evolved considerably in terms of infrastructure and benefits. Modern vessels offer comfortable environments, such as gyms, games rooms, cable TV and high-quality food. Concerns about employee safety are also addressed with well-equipped wards, trained professionals and helicopters ready for emergencies.

Impact of Long Periods on Board

Communication technology allows employees to stay in touch with their families, reducing the impact of long periods isolation. However, holidays such as Christmas and New Year remain challenging. Even with improvements in infrastructure, offshore work requires significant personal sacrifices, such as absence from important family events and dependence on weather conditions for emergencies.

These factors underline the need for regular campaigns to mental health awareness carried out by companies, and not just at specific times of the year. Seagems is an example in this regard, winning awards such as Highlight in Emotional Health and Healthy Management from Great People Mental Health, highly committed to physical well-being and emotional well-being of its employees.

Mental Health Care

Among the actions promoted by Seagems are: 24-hour psychological support platforms, workshops and lectures on awareness and prevention of mental and emotional disorders, modern infrastructure on the vessels to minimize isolation, and social workers for support. Glaucia emphasizes that a caring and empathetic approach to employees is essential: 'Our commitment is ongoing to the health and well-being of our employees, including awareness and prevention initiatives.'

Carlos Chamberelli, an occupational physician at Seagems, notes that people aged 20 to 40 struggle more with emotional issues. 'Our medical team offers personalized support, monitoring each case closely, to ensure a healthy daily routine both in the office and on the ships.'

Sensitivity to Emotional Crises

Michel Vieira, a nurse on the Ônix, is often the first to assist employees who feel unwell, often without realizing they are experiencing emotional crises. "I have treated colleagues who thought they had heart problems when in fact they were suffering from anxiety attacks," he explains. Michel and other nurses participate in training focused on emotional health, including breathing techniques and appropriate approaches to crises.

The company also encourages regular physical exercise and a balanced diet through internal programs and communications, and provides psychological support frequent to ensure a healthy work-life balance. Employees are encouraged to take time off the ship, typically 14 days, to connect with their families.

Recognition and Constant Support

Emotional problems reported on board are often related to personal issues or relationships, generating anxiety due to the impossibility of resolving such problems during boarding. For this reason, the company promotes close observation among colleagues, encouraging communication about different behaviors that may indicate emotional difficulties.

Nurse Michel reinforces the importance of identifying warning signs, such as tachycardia, tremors, sweating, feeling short of breath, dizziness and other symptoms that may indicate anxiety attacks or other emotional illnesses such as depression, which require careful attention and individualized treatment.

Quality of Life Improvement Program

In 2023, Seagems implemented the Adding by Subtracting program, aimed at simplifying processes, improving productivity and improving the quality of life of employees. Based on eliminating superfluous activities and optimizing daily tasks, the program also employs advanced technological solutions, including AI. These actions reinforce the company's commitment to creating an environment that values not only performance, but also the comfort and emotional well-being of its employees, considerably increasing employee well-being.
