Revealed Corolla With Wings: The Low Wing Single-Engine Aircraft, Built With Composite Materials, Was Developed Following Toyota’s Automotive Production Concepts.

Corolla of the Skies? Imagine the scene: a revolutionary aircraft. This would not be just another plane, but rather a masterpiece from Toyota, powered by a powerful V8 engine from the iconic Lexus sedan. Toyota, renowned for its automotive excellence, aimed to challenge the skies with an innovation that promised to redefine the boundaries between asphalt and clouds.

Discover how this fusion of car and plane was about to transform the aviation world and surprise even the most skeptical enthusiasts.

The World’s Largest Vehicle Manufacturer Has Tried to Venture Into the Aviation Sector

On May 31, the first flight of a Toyota aircraft completed 22 years. The low wing single-engine, made from composite materials, was created based on the principles of simplified construction from Toyota’s automotive production system. Yaris Cross

The TAA-1 test took place at Mojave Airport in California in 2002. The model, capable of four occupants, was an attempt to compete with the then-new Cirrus SR20 and SR22, Columbia, and traditional single-engine planes from Cessna and Piper. The information comes from UOL.

Toyota Followed in the Footsteps of Automotive Giants Honda and Mitsubishi to Develop Its Own Aircraft

Toyota’s goal was to develop its own aircraft, following the example of other Japanese companies in the automotive sector, such as Honda and Mitsubishi. The idea was for Toyota Motor Sales’ automotive sales division to help keep production costs low. Yaris Cross

The project spanned 18 years, from 1990 to 2008. The first flight was conducted with an aircraft equipped with a Lycoming IO-360 engine of 180 hp. However, the ambition was to enable the use of an automotive engine, which would reduce production costs and open a new business unit. Yaris Cross

Corolla of the Skies: Japanese Automaker Conducted Some Tests With a V8 Engine From the Lexus LS400 Sedan

Corolla of the Skies: The company conducted some tests with a V8 engine from the 1991 Lexus LS400 sedan, but the result was below expectations. To try to improve the aircraft development and apply its own engine, Toyota hired engineers from Raytheon and Boeing. The company even stated that the aircraft would be a sort of “Corolla with wings”. Yaris Cross

After numerous negotiations and attempts to create a joint venture with any piston aircraft manufacturer at the time, the project was shelved during the financial crisis of 2008. All existing contracts were canceled, and in 2011, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) canceled the registration of the TAA-1 aircraft.
