Luxury SUV From BMW In The Range Of R$ 60 Thousand? Discover The Used BMW X1 SUV That Is Gaining Traction In The Used Market. Is It Still Worth Buying In 2024?

Introduced in 2009, the luxury SUV BMW X1 inaugurated the curious segment of “entry-level premium SUVs,” even dominating the arrival of competitors like Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA. Now, the used BMW X1 is gaining prominence in the used market. In this article, we will detail this BMW SUV and whether it is still worth buying in 2024.

A Little About The History Of The BMW X1 SUV

The most successful first-generation luxury SUV version was the sDrive18i, which sold well until 2014. Its biggest attraction is the brand’s typical dynamic behavior, thanks to the weight well-distributed between the axles, high torsional rigidity, and the suspensions, multi-link in the front and double A in the rear. The brakes of the BMW X1 SUV are efficient and the steering is communicative.

It is such a well-tuned set that highlights the lack of power from the N46 engine, a naturally aspirated 2.0 four-cylinder with 150 horsepower and 20.4 kgfm of torque. What helps is the six-speed sequential automatic transmission, crucial for moving its 1,455 kg.

There is no sunroof, parking sensors, or rearview camera. The equipment level is limited to analog air conditioning, multifunction steering wheel, and leather seats (with manual adjustments). The xDrive28i version featured two engine options. Between 2010 and 2012, there was the N52, a naturally aspirated 3.0 six-cylinder with 258 hp.

What Is The Best Version Of The Used BMW X1 SUV?

The best cost/benefit of the BMW SUV is the sDrive20i, introduced alongside the subtle facelift in 2013. Its N20 engine is a four-cylinder turbo with 184 horsepower and 27.5 kgfm consistent between 1,250 and 4,500 RPM.

The eight-speed automatic transmission defines a much superior performance set. It drives better, consumes less, and is much better equipped, with cruise control, parking sensors, electrically adjustable seats, digital air conditioning, and 18-inch wheels.

The most desired options for the used BMW X1 SUV are the GP package (GPS, DVD, and iDrive interface) and the sunroof.

The power remained unchanged in the 2.0 ActiveFlex engine, the main novelty of the 2015 model. If performance is the goal, there is nothing better than the xDrive28i version, as its biggest attribute is the all-wheel drive, which electronically distributes torque between the axles, with 40% to the front and 60% to the rear.

However, when buying the BMW SUV, it is important to check the maintenance history. All versions require skilled labor and specific tools. Therefore, it is worth highlighting that a small service with original parts can easily reach R$ 20,000.

Main Defects Of The Used BMW X1

The N46 engine of the sDrive18i version is notorious for the drying out of valve seals, identified by smoke at idle caused by the burning of lubricant oil.

The repair cost ranges from R$ 9,000 in independent shops to R$ 17,000 in dealerships. Another chronic problem with the engine is oil leakage from the valve cover gasket, vacuum pump rings, and rotation sensor flange.

The transmission requires fluid replacement every 80,000 km. The service is often neglected due to the high cost, which can total R$ 8,000. The electrical system also tends to fail and depends on a battery within specifications. Batteries outside the parameters overload the alternator and cause a series of electrical failures.
