Pioneering Technology Strengthens Safety at the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Complex
Norte Energia presented during the DamsWeek 2025, held in Porto Alegre (RS), a significant advancement for the safety of Brazilian dams.
The concessionaire of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant developed a pioneering model for spatial predictability of channels in tropical soils.
These phenomena can compromise the integrity of earth dams, which is why the project gained prominence at the event.
SISPREDI-BM System Enhances Prevention with Artificial Intelligence
The project resulted in the Prediction System for Surge and Channel Evolution (SISPREDI-BM).
This unique tool, based on artificial intelligence, strengthens monitoring and enables the prediction of the formation of these infiltration channels.
The study used machine learning and neural networks, transforming over a decade of field observations into a robust scientific methodology.
As a result, the system can anticipate risks and support strategic decisions, increasing the reliability of the structures.
International Event Reinforces the Relevance of Brazilian Research
The results were presented in March of 2025, during DamsWeek, an international reference event in dam safety.
The meeting brought together experts and reinforced the need to expand the prevention culture in the sector.
According to the National Dam Safety System, Brazil already has over 28 thousand registered structures.
This scenario makes investment in advanced technological solutions essential.

Norte Energia Highlights Commitment to Innovation and Sustainability
According to Wagner Lellis, Superintendent of Maintenance at Norte Energia, the project reaffirms the company’s commitment to innovation.
He emphasized that the methodology developed at Belo Monte can serve as a reference for other projects in tropical soils worldwide.
The initiative contributes directly to safety and sustainable development.
Researcher Rodrigo de Lima Rodrigues, responsible for the PDI, highlighted that the initiative transformed field knowledge into applied science and technology.
He stated that the research delivered concrete solutions for geotechnical engineering.
Investment and Partnerships Consolidate International Advancement
The Research and Development Project (PDI) received R$ 2.17 million in investments. In addition, the resources were regulated by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), under the P&D Program (PD-07427-0322/2022).
The initiative was partnered with Itaipu Parquetec, the Federal Technological University of Paraná (UTFPR), and São Paulo State University (Unesp). Therefore, the project gained academic robustness and technical applicability.
As a result of this collaboration, the methodology employed has sparked international interest. This places Norte Energia at the forefront of geotechnical engineering, according to sector experts.
Consequently, Brazil reinforces its position as a reference in dam safety. Additionally, the country advances on the global stage of research and technological innovation.
Finally, this initiative demonstrates that structured investments, combined with qualified partnerships, have a direct impact on the modernization of national infrastructure.
