Experimental Change in Units of Interior of São Paulo Alters the Distribution of the Weekly Shift, Keeps the 44 Hours Foreseen in Law and Expands the Debate on Employee Retention in the Retail Supermarket Sector, Which Faces Difficulties to Fill Operational Positions.

The Savegnago Group announced this Tuesday (06) that it will test the 5×2 schedule, with five working days and two off days, in stores in Sumaré and Hortolândia, in the interior of São Paulo.

The change will be implemented throughout the month and will replace, in these units, the 6×1 routine, a model widely adopted by the retail supermarket sector.

The proposal maintains the weekly load of 44 hours foreseen in labor legislation but redistributes this total over five days.

In practice, the daily shift will be 8h48, instead of the 7h20 practiced in the 6×1 format, according to information disclosed by the group.

How The New 5×2 Schedule Works in Retail

The company claims that the goal of the project is to provide more predictability for workers, without reducing the total weekly hours.

In a statement, the group described the initiative as a way to “promote greater balance between professional and personal life, without altering the weekly workload foreseen in law.”

The administrative and financial vice president of the Savegnago Group, Beto Borsoni, stated that the intention is to reorganize the routine without compromising the operation of the stores.

“The proposal for the new schedule is to offer a more balanced and predictable routine to employees while preserving the organization and efficiency of operations,” he said.

In the executive’s assessment, having two consecutive days off can directly impact work readiness.

“Having two days off makes a difference in physical recovery, family interaction, and readiness for work, directly reflecting on the well-being and motivation of teams,” he added.

Pilot Project Began in Indaiatuba

Before reaching the stores in Sumaré and Hortolândia, the 5×2 schedule had already been tested by the group in Indaiatuba, as published by CPG at the time.

The experience took place in operational sectors of Savegnago and served as a basis for the project’s expansion.

From these initial tests, the company decided to extend the model to other units, maintaining the 44 weekly hours, but concentrated over five working days.

The group did not disclose detailed balances from this preliminary phase.

Expansion to Other Cities in the Interior of São Paulo

In addition to Sumaré and Hortolândia, the announced plan includes Savegnago units in Campinas.

The project will also be applied in Paulistão Atacadista stores located in Barretos, Sertãozinho, and Franca, all in the interior of São Paulo.

According to the network, the strategy is to observe the functioning of the new schedule in different operational contexts.

The idea is to compare impacts on workflow, team management, and store routine.

Monitoring Results and Future Evaluation

During the implementation period, the group stated that it will monitor the effects of the new distribution of hours in the day-to-day operations of the units.

The monitoring includes operational indicators, team performance, and internal organization impacts.

“We will monitor operational indicators, team performance, and impacts on the routine of the stores.

The results will support the evaluation of a possible expansion of the model to other units of the network in 2026,” informed the Savegnago Group.

Units Involved in Sumaré and Hortolândia

In Sumaré, the group has stores in Jardim Paulista, in the Nova Veneza region, and in Jardim Bom Retiro.

In Hortolândia, the unit is located in Vila São Francisco, according to the official statement.

Savegnago also operates a supermarket in Centro de Americana and a Paulistão Atacadista unit in Vila Oliveira, in Santa Bárbara d’Oeste.

However, these two cities are not included in this initial phase of the project.

The company mentions only the possibility of future expansion to these locations, should the test results be considered positive.

Labor Shortage Pressures the Supermarket Sector

In presenting the change, the group associated the initiative with the need to make the routine more attractive for both current workers in the units and new candidates.

The 6×1 schedule, predominant in the sector, is often cited by workers as an obstacle to balancing work, commuting, and personal life.

This factor weighs especially in roles that require continuous presence in-store, such as customer service, restocking, and cashier.

Without disclosing numbers, the company indicates that the test seeks to address a recurring problem in retail: the difficulty in maintaining complete teams.

The group did not specify which specific indicators will be used as reference.

It also did not provide targets related to turnover reduction, absenteeism, or increased hiring.

Regional Change and Recent Precedent

The Savegnago announcement comes after another company in the region disclosed a similar change.

In November 2025, Embalixo, a manufacturer of plastic bags, announced the adoption of the 5×2 schedule at its Hortolândia unit.

At the time, the company opened job vacancies after the shift change.

The movement was cited as a regional example of schedule reorganization in response to competition for labor, especially in operational activities.

With the expansion of the test to different cities and formats of stores, the group claims that it aims to gather data throughout the implementation period.

The decision to make the model permanent will depend on these results.

In a sector that relies on in-person labor and continuous operation, to what extent can the 5×2 schedule consolidate as a competitive differential to attract and retain workers?
