The European Company M.A.R.S. Europe A/S Signed a New Agreement with Porto Central, in Espírito Santo, to Detail the Project of a Shipyard Focused on the Demolition and Recycling of Oil Platforms, with Studies Scheduled Until 2026.
The oil sector in Brazil may be about to gain a strategic boost in Espírito Santo. The European giant M.A.R.S. Europe A/S, a subsidiary of M.A.R.S. Inc, signed a new memorandum of understanding with Porto Central, located in Presidente Kennedy, for the advancement of a project that promises to transform the State into a global hub for decommissioning and recycling platforms and ships.
The agreement, formalized during the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Brazil 2025 in Rio de Janeiro, represents a significant step for the development of the shipyard — a world-class venture focused on dismantling old structures from the oil and gas sector.
Feasibility Study Confirms the Potential of the Project in South Espírito Santo
The partnership between the companies began in May 2024, when a preliminary study on the feasibility of the installation was conducted. The survey indicated favorable conditions for establishing the shipyard in the Porto Central area, currently under construction.

With the new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), additional investments will be allocated to detailed engineering, operational safety, and economic analysis of the project. The expectation is that the supplementary studies will be completed by 2026, providing the necessary technical and financial basis for the final decision on the start of construction.
M.A.R.S. Invests in European Model of Sustainable Recycling in the Oil Sector
For Kim Thygesen, CEO of M.A.R.S. Europe, the project goes far beyond creating industrial infrastructure. According to him, the goal is to boost the Brazilian offshore industry and promote sustainable practices in decommissioning.
“This extension reflects our mutual dedication to advancing Brazil’s offshore industry, promoting sustainable decommissioning practices, and fostering regional economic growth. Recognizing the current pressures on ports due to new constructions and maintenance plans, we are committed to jointly developing a facility dedicated to the dismantling and recycling of ships, similar to Denmark’s successful model,” stated Thygesen.
The executive highlighted that the future unit will help reduce port congestion and create a specialized hub for offshore asset recycling, strengthening the regional economy and increasing the capacity for reusing structures from the oil sector.
Porto Central Wants to Transform Brazil into a Global Reference in Offshore Recycling
According to Porto Central, the initiative reinforces Espírito Santo’s positioning as an innovation and sustainability hub in the oil sector. The partnership with M.A.R.S. Europe is considered strategic for placing Brazil among the leading countries in sustainable management of offshore assets.
In addition to boosting the oil production chain, the project is expected to create skilled jobs and stimulate new recycling technologies inspired by successful European models.
