The offshore wind turbine development projects will be carried out thanks to the approval of the United Kingdom Government, which allowed the awarding of contracts for clean energy generation

Tidal energy leader Orbital Marine Power reaches significant milestone with the award of two Contracts for Difference (CfDs) for 7,2 MW in line with UK Allocation Round 5 (AR5). This achievement promises to catalyze the development of tidal turbine projects in northern Scotland, Orkney, with the addition of six new turbines under the CfD regime, according to the Offshore website.

Orbital Marine Power's floating tidal turbines represent a significant advancement in clean, sustainable energy generation. The O2 turbines, with a capacity of 2 MW+, which became operational in July 2021, are recognized as the most powerful tidal turbines in the world. Its design aims for implementation in multiple units, effectively exploiting the powerful sea and river currents close to the sea surface, resulting in more efficient energy production.

Tidal energy: contributing to a low-carbon grid

These CfDs represent an important step for Orbital Marine Power, enabling it to grow its operations in the Orkney region of northern Scotland. The O2 turbine's low-carbon electricity generation is already connected to the UK grid, providing clean, sustainable energy. The ability to export electricity to Orkney reinforces the UK's commitment towards a greener, low environmental impact energy network.

The O2 project is a milestone in the UK's journey towards cleaner energy sources. With the award of these CfDs, Orbital Marine Power is well positioned to expand its capacity of generation of sustainable energy. The CfDs will provide an enabling environment for the construction of six new floating tidal turbines in Orkney, further boosting low-carbon electricity production in the region.

A greener future with Orbital Marine Power

Orbital Marine Power is a pioneer in exploring the vast opportunities offered by tidal and current energies. The O2 floating tidal turbine system represents an innovation revolutionary technology which captures the strength of the most intense sea and river currents, providing clean and efficient electricity. The award of these CfDs further strengthens Orbital Marine Power's position at the forefront of sustainable energy generation and reinforces the UK's commitment to transitioning to cleaner, renewable energy sources.

With the UK actively seeking ways to reduce its carbon footprint and promote a greener future, Orbital Marine Power's contribution to low-carbon electricity production is invaluable. With projects underway across Orkney and continued government support, the company is positioned to lead the way towards a more sustainable and energy efficient future.
