The expansion of the Port of Luís Correia, in Piauí, stands out as a historic milestone that will not only increase port capacity and diversify economic activities, but also promises to generate many job openings in various industrial spheres and along the pre-existing fishing production chain .
The governor of Piauí, Rafael Fonteles, of the Workers' Party (PT), announced last Wednesday (23/08), that large-scale training is planned aimed at creating new direct and indirect jobs in the surrounding area to the Port of Luís Correia, located on the coast of the state. The objective of this initiative is to boost the economy local and regional, generating many jobs.
Governor Rafael Fonteles announces plan to strengthen and increase the number of job openings around the Port of Luís Correia
This undertaking assumes a historic character for the region, projecting itself as a catalyst for the economic development of both the coast and the whole of Piauí.
The governor emphasized his commitment to this initiative, noting that the service order for the fishing terminal pier at the Port of Luís Correia was signed in May of this year.

The project, which had been envisioned over six decades ago, is now being revived with a renewed focus.
Rafael Fonteles enthusiastically declared: “This is a truly historic moment for Piauí. With an average draft of eight meters — seven meters at low tide and nine meters at high tide — our port will have full operating capacity for the fishing terminal, in addition to accommodating coastal shipping. This is a significant first step towards establishing an efficient flow of goods directly in and out of Porto Luís Correia.”
One of the most anticipated elements of this undertaking is the fishing terminal, which stands out as a crucial phase of the port operation.
The governor pointed out that the port will be multifunctional, encompassing both industrial and fishing activities.
This will not only boost the pre-existing fishing production chain, but will also generate direct and indirect job openings in the industrial sphere.
The expansion aims to diversify Piauí's economy and reduce dependence on neighboring complexes
Enthusiastically, Fonteles added: “We are very optimistic about a canning industry that will be alongside the wharf. Thus, it would be an industrial-fishing port, which will generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs in a fishing production chain that already exists. This chain will be better qualified, better professionalized, it will generate more income for those families, it will generate new industrial jobs, which will have a very relevant impact on the coastal plain of the state of Piauí”.
In addition, planning for the future includes expanding the average draft to an impressive 14 meters, transforming the Port of Luís Correia into a large-scale infrastructure.
This will pave the way for moving a wider range of cargo, including grain and fertilizer.
Consequently, this expansion will reduce dependence on ports in neighboring states, such as the Port of Itaqui, in Maranhão.
“Piauí is a state that exports especially grains, and possibly minerals. We have iron in Piripiri, iron in Paulistana, nickel in Capitão Gervásio Oliveira, which is already a reality. So, this step is, in my view, a watershed for the economic development of Piauí”, emphasized the governor.
