The Expansion of Luis Correia Port in Piauí Stands Out as a Historical Milestone That Not Only Will Increase Port Capacity and Diversify Economic Activities but Also Promises to Generate Many Jobs in Various Industrial Sectors and Along the Existing Fishing Production Chain.
The governor of Piauí, Rafael Fonteles, of the Workers’ Party (PT), announced last Wednesday, (08/23), that large-scale training is planned to create new direct and indirect jobs in the area surrounding Luis Correia Port, located on the state’s coast. The aim of this initiative is to boost the local and regional economy, generating many job opportunities.

This project takes on a historic character for the region, positioning itself as a catalyst for economic development both on the coast and throughout Piauí.
The governor emphasized the commitment to this initiative, highlighting that the signing of the service order for the fishing terminal’s dock at Luis Correia Port occurred in May of this year.

The project, initially conceived over six decades ago, is now being revived with a renewed focus.
Rafael Fonteles declared enthusiastically: “This is a truly historic moment for Piauí. With an average depth of eight meters — seven meters during low tide and nine meters during high tide — our port will have full operational capacity for the fishing terminal, in addition to accommodating cabotage navigation. This is a significant inaugural step towards establishing an efficient flow of goods, entering and leaving directly from Luis Correia Port.”
One of the most anticipated elements of this project is the fishing terminal, which stands out as a crucial phase of the port operation.
The governor highlighted that the port will be multifunctional, encompassing both industrial and fishing activities.
This will not only boost the existing fishing production chain but will also generate direct and indirect jobs in the industrial sector.
The Expansion Aims to Diversify the Economy of Piauí and Reduce Dependence on Neighboring Complexes
With enthusiasm, Fonteles added: “We are very optimistic about a canning industry that will be placed next to the dock. Thus, it would be an industrial-fishing port that will generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs in an existing fishing production chain. This chain will be better trained, more professionalized, will generate more income for those families, and will create new industrial job opportunities, which will have a very relevant impact on the coastal plain of Piauí.”
Additionally, the planning for the future includes plans to expand the average depth to an impressive 14 meters, transforming Luis Correia Port into large-scale infrastructure.
This will pave the way for the movement of a broader range of cargo, including grains and fertilizers.
Consequently, this expansion will reduce dependence on ports in neighboring states, such as the Port of Itaqui in Maranhão.
“Piauí is an exporting state, especially of grains, and possibly of minerals. We have iron in Piripiri, iron in Paulistana, and nickel in Capitão Gervásio Oliveira, which is already a reality. So, this step is, in my view, a turning point for the economic development of Piauí,” emphasized the governor.
