Intense Smoke Was Seen From Afar and Emergency Teams Were Mobilized

A fire outbreak was reported on the morning of this Monday (April 21) on the platform Cherne 1, belonging to Petrobras, located in the Campos Basin, on the coast of Rio de Janeiro state.

According to preliminary information released by the Notícias Macaé page and endorsed by CPG Click Petróleo e Gás in a WhatsApp group for the offshore area, a thick column of black smoke could be seen kilometers away from the coast, causing concern among workers in nearby units.

UPDATE 10AM 17min. Preliminary information reports that a man fell into the sea and was rescued, while the other 176 workers are fine. The first images are circulating on social media and show the moment of the fire, followed by the large-scale spread of smoke. It is still unclear if there was in fact an explosion on the unit.

The Cherne 1 platform is a fixed unit (of the “Fixed Platform” type) that is part of one of the mature fields in the Campos Basin, a region responsible for a significant portion of national oil production. The Cherne field is operated by Petrobras, which has so far not issued an official statement regarding the incident.

Petrobras Will Investigate Causes of the Incident at Cherne 1

Explosions on oil platforms are rare, but when they occur, they require an immediate response from safety teams. The protocol involves activating emergency plans, communicating with the Brazilian Navy, and support from helicopters and rescue vessels.

Historically, accidents in the Campos Basin generate significant repercussions due to the density of platforms and the number of workers involved in offshore operations. Cases like that of the Enchova platform in 1984 left deep marks in the history of the Brazilian oil industry.

Official Positioning from Petrobras: The state-owned company reported that the fire on the Cherne 1 platform (PCH-1) was quickly controlled by emergency teams. According to the company, the unit has not produced oil since 2020. A worker who was providing services to Petrobras suffered minor burns, was rescued, received treatment on a support vessel, and is in the process of aeromedical disembarkation. The company stated that he is conscious and that the other people on board are fine. As a preventive measure, non-essential teams will be disembarked to assess the integrity of the unit. A committee will be created to investigate the causes of the incident.

Addendum

Although the Cherne 1 platform (PCH-1) is still officially under the management of Petrobras, it is part of the asset package whose sale was agreed upon with Perenco Petróleo e Gás do Brasil Ltda in April 2024, including the Cherne and Bagre fields in the Campos Basin, for US$ 10 million. Despite the signing of the contract, the definitive transfer of operations has not yet been completed, which is scheduled to occur throughout 2025, when Perenco is expected to initiate a revitalization plan aimed at resuming production.

Update In Progress

The team at CPG Click Petróleo e Gás continues to monitor the case and will seek updates directly from sources linked to the offshore sector, unions, and statements from Petrobras itself.
