The Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), in partnership with the Open University of Brazil (UAB), launched the announcement 032/UAB/SEAD/UFSC/2024 , offering 150 places for the free lato sensu postgraduate course in African literature in Portuguese and Afro-Brazilian languages. The program, carried out 100% online (EAD), is aimed at teachers and professionals in the area of  education who wish to deepen their knowledge in the appreciation of African and Afro-Brazilian cultural and literary heritage.

Scheduled to start in March 2025, the course will have synchronous classes on Saturdays and asynchronous activities for a week, promoting flexibility and accessibility to participants.

What is the objective of the course and its workload?

The main objective of this free, online postgraduate course (EAD) is to train basic education teachers to include content from African and Afro-Brazilian literature in Portuguese language subjects and interdisciplinary projects. In addition, it seeks to support compliance with Law 10.639/03, which makes the teaching of Afro-Brazilian and African history and culture mandatory.

With a total workload of 630 hours , the course is divided into four thematic axes:

  • Distance Learning and Research Methodologies (180 hours);
  • History of the Portuguese Language (90 hours);
  • African Literatures (180 hours);
  • Afro-Brazilian Literature (180 hours).

Where are the available vacancies?

The notice provides for 150 vacancies of the free and online course (EAD), distributed equally among five UFSC centers:

  • Chapeco: 30 vacancies
  • Florianopolis: 30 vacancies
  • Lages: 30 vacancies
  • Praia Grande: 30 vacancies
  • Saint Benedict of the South: 30 vacancies

Candidates can choose one of the centers at the time of registration, ensuring access to in-person support when necessary.

How does the selection process work?

The selection process is primarily aimed at basic education teachers in the area of โ€‹โ€‹Portuguese language or related subjects. Points will be awarded based on academic training and professional experience, such as:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Literature: up to 5 points;
  • Time working as a teacher: 3 points per year;
  • Absence of postgraduate studies: 10 points.

Additionally, we bring  30% of vacancies are reserved for candidates who self-declare as black, brown, indigenous, quilombola, people with disabilities or transgender, upon presentation of supporting documents.
