The Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), in partnership with the Open University of Brazil (UAB), has launched the announcement 032/UAB/SEAD/UFSC/2024, offering 150 slots for the free postgraduate course in African Portuguese-language literatures and Afro-Brazilian literature. The program, conducted entirely online (EAD), is aimed at teachers and professionals in the education field who wish to deepen their knowledge in valuing African and Afro-Brazilian cultural and literary heritages.
Expected to start in March 2025, the course will have synchronous classes on Saturdays and asynchronous activities during the week, promoting flexibility and accessibility for participants.
What Is the Course’s Objective and Its Workload?
The free online postgraduate course aims to primarily empower basic education teachers to include content on African and Afro-Brazilian literatures in Portuguese language subjects and interdisciplinary projects. Additionally, it seeks to support the compliance with Law 10.639/03, which mandates the teaching of Afro-Brazilian and African history and culture.

Where Are the Available Slots?
The announcement provides 150 slots for the free online course (EAD), equally distributed among five UFSC hubs:
- Chapecó: 30 slots
- Florianópolis: 30 slots
- Lages: 30 slots
- Praia Grande: 30 slots
- São Bento do Sul: 30 slots
Candidates can choose one of the hubs at the time of enrollment, ensuring access to in-person support when necessary.
How Does the Selection Process Work?
The selection process is primarily aimed at basic education teachers in the area of Portuguese language or related subjects. Points will be awarded based on academic background and professional experience, such as:
- Degree in Language Studies: up to 5 points;
- Time of service as a teacher: 3 points per year;
- Absence of postgraduate degree: 10 points.
Additionally, 30% of the slots are reserved for self-declared black, brown, indigenous, quilombola, people with disabilities, or transgender candidates, upon presentation of supporting documents.
