“The miners were swept away by a torrent of mud caused by the heavy rains,” a statement released by the firefighters on their Facebook page stated. “The total toll so far is 126 dead,” the note added.

“Rescue operations are ongoing,” fire department sources said, after a police commander in the area indicated that search efforts had been halted due to heavy rains.

Landslides in mines are a frequent accident in Kachin state. At least 54 people died in such accidents in April 2019 while working in the lucrative yet poorly regulated jade industry, which employs underpaid migrants to extract this semiprecious stone in high demand in China.

Myanmar is the world’s largest producer of jadeite, a highly valued variety of jade that is primarily mined in the Kachin mountains, and its resources help finance both sides of a civil war that has been fought for decades by Kachin ethnic insurgents and the Myanmar military.
