Angra 2 Nuclear Power Plant Will Be Offline for 22 Days
The Angra 2 nuclear power plant located in Angra dos Reis – RJ, was taken offline from the National Interconnected System for fuel replenishment on Monday, June 22.
Eletronuclear reported that due to the new coronavirus pandemic, it decided to reduce activities to the minimum necessary, keeping only the essential work at the unit. The forecast is that the Angra 2 shutdown will last 22 days.
Eletronuclear explained in a statement that it is leveraging the experience of nuclear plants in other countries that are also undergoing refueling and maintenance outages during this period.
According to the state-run company, of the 4,500 activities necessary for a typical outage at the plant, only 1,100 actions will be carried out, and the big challenge will be to complete about 20% of typical outage activities with 15% of the normally available staff.
João Carlos da Cunha Bastos, Director of Operations and Commercialization at Eletronuclear, stated that this will be an unprecedented outage, quite difficult and labor-intensive, but maintaining generation availability is essential for Brazil in this critical moment that the country is experiencing and also to ensure the economic balance of the company.
