Large retailers such as Americanas, Carrefour and Casas Bahia are affected, resulting in the closure of more than 750 stores across the country, leading to a new wave of mass layoffs.

A mass dismissal which affects the retail sector in Brazil has generated great concern among workers and market experts. Large chains such as Americanas, Carrefour and Casas Bahia face an unprecedented crisis, resulting in the closure of more than 750 stores and leaving more than 35 employees without jobs. This scenario reveals a profound restructuring in the operations of these companies, directly affecting the economy and the job market.

In recent months, the Brazil has witnessed a wave of mass layoffs, driven by financial crises and accounting fraud that shook the stability of retail giants. The most evident impact is in the closing of stores and layoffs of thousands of workers.

Mass layoffs in Casas Bahia and Americanas

As Bahia Houses, for example, closed 55 stores throughout 2023, with 17 of those closures occurring in the last quarter. This movement resulted in the dismissal of 8,6 employees, part of a strategy to eliminate loss-making points of sale and cut expenses. The company, which recorded a loss of R$1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2023, also reduced its senior leadership by 42%, in an attempt to reverse the unfavorable financial situation.

Already Americans, another Brazilian retail giant, went through a mass dismissal after the discovery of an accounting fraud worth R$25,2 billion in January 2023. Since then, the company has closed 152 stores and laid off 13.875 employees. This devastating scenario led Americanas to reduce its workforce from 43.123 to 32.248 employees.

Another 3,5 employees will be laid off online

Other networks also felt the impact. THE Day, which entered into judicial recovery in March 2023, announced the closure of 343 of its 587 stores, concentrating its operations in São Paulo. As a result, approximately 3,5 employees will be laid off, reducing its team to just 2 people.

Carrefour was not immune to the crisis

O Carrefour recorded a loss of R$565 million in the last quarter of 2023, which resulted in the closure of 123 stores and in the possible dismissal of up to 12,5 workers.

Mass layoffs ended up becoming a necessity

Those mass layoffs reflect an urgent need for companies to adapt, who seek ways to survive in an increasingly competitive and uncertain market. Casas Bahia, for example, is focused on eliminating underperforming points of sale, while Americanas is trying to get back on its feet after judicial recovery. Dia, in turn, is concentrating its operations in the capital of São Paulo, while Carrefour recalculates its strategy to avoid greater losses.

Future of Brazilian retail

The future of Brazilian retail remains uncertain, and the Mass layoffs continue to be a reality for many workers. Digitalization and the strengthening of e-commerce appear as possible paths to recovery, but adapting to this new scenario will be crucial for the survival of these large chains.

For consumers, these changes could mean fewer options and higher prices as companies try to balance their finances. However, there is hope that this crisis will force a positive transformation in the sector, leading to more efficient and competitive operations in the future.

A mass dismissal that affects the retail sector in Brazil is a reflection of an economy in transformation, where innovation and resilience will be essential to overcome challenges and ensure a more stable future for both companies and workers.

I don't mind, you can close everything, I'll buy everything on the free market.
I was a loyal customer of one of these stores. One day I went to buy furniture for my house. The saleswoman treated me very badly. I left and never set foot there again.

But all this is a lie. Here in my city, there are job offers for supermarkets every day. Look at the news, they are talking about employees who earn very well, but see if these senior employees would give up a raise for the job. The poor guys are forced to accept tiny adjustments, and woe betide them if they don't accept them.

True, Walmir. The problem is that people can no longer change jobs and start over. In the past, just like me, I was fired from a company and I earned 10 salaries, but the market was weak and I could only find a new job that paid 2 salaries. I accepted, studied, passed a test and here I am. People are afraid to take risks and settle.

That's not the question. The question is: What have these businessmen done for the population in all this time? You see, these are companies that buy each other and most of them involved fraud, and the government is not to blame for this. I mean, the Federal Revenue Service, which works for us who have little, doesn't work for big companies. It issues an incorrect number on the income tax, to avoid being caught in the fine mesh.

People support the previous government, but they forget that in the previous government, businessmen did well, especially those in agribusiness, who let loose and deforested with the consent of the former president. Now, as for these companies, you said it all. They buy each other, there is fraud within the company and it is the government's fault, of course not. It is bad management. We see BYD giving a discount on cars over 50 thousand, because it has the margin to do so. I want to see Casas Bahia reduce its white goods range to sell more and make a little less profit.

700 deaths in Brazil in a country with 210 million inhabitants. Africa (continent), 1 billion inhabitants, 220 deaths. And the PT is the **** of the story. Did you read the article where it was said that Brazil would be the second country in the world to be given the vaccine, around September 2020? The government clung to the fact that the pharmaceutical company was not responsible for any collateral damage. And because of this, the **** government made the campaign to start vaccination in the country difficult. How many deaths would we have avoided if it weren't for this fact? But the PT is the **** of the story.

Extremist???? You are the ones who don't accept contradiction. You are the extremists. Communism? Well, that's what we saw when the Berlin Wall was torn down, the executions on the border with North Korea, the requests for political asylum from Cubans... One more important detail, my friend: Don't confuse a day of chaos by a few hundred unarmed people with a coup d'état, okay? That's a narrative for political persecution.
Your cognition is precarious. Only intellectual boasting is good.

These guys are scamming companies and the PT is blamed. Read the entire report. Americanas in particular committed a billion-dollar scam and the PT is to blame. The partners of Americanas committed a billion-dollar scam and with that money became partners of Petrobrás. They will get information and then talk about the Federal Government.

The problem is not partisan, but rather the economic system. PT is as capitalist as other governments, despite the improvement in social indicators in the **** model. What is needed is to end the capitalism that keeps a few very rich and a large mass poorly paid.

If you pay attention to the text, this decline has been going on for a long time, like Americanas (January 2023) PT hadn't even climbed the palace ramp. Don't say M, get informed. The age of technology will eliminate many jobs in any government. Nowadays, everyone buys online.

The government has nothing to do with the mismanagement of CEOs who receive millions and cheat on their balance sheets like those of Americanas, e-commerce, 4 years of disastrous misgovernment. The country is recovering and if the madman had won we would be 10 times worse off. Only bad characters **** who pretend not to see. The current government has nothing to do with all this. Quite the opposite.

More than what the PL destroyed?? It let the cattle pass and we still have the repercussions of that. In 2022, when COVID had already ended, the country was supposed to have returned to normal, but no, the PL government, which by the way is the same one that governs the state of Rio de Janeiro, sold out to businessmen and agribusiness and we are still at rock bottom. Look at the prices in 2019 and 2022, from 2022 onwards, they went down a little, but in 2022 the world returned to normal and Brazil had no moral standing with the rich countries, only with the other Trump.

This is before the taxman has even started using his scythe. When the market realizes that the tax reform will double the final tax, half of the consumers will already be dead, without jobs and without food.

What does one thing have to do with the other? If companies are poorly managed, it is the fault of their administrators. What does the government have to do with it? What is changing is the way consumers are buying, mostly through e-commerce and no longer in physical stores. That is why these companies have to adapt to the market. You just need to have a little intelligence to understand the real reason for the layoffs.

It's a shame that those who suffer are the unemployed, but few people know about this. The problem should be more publicized. It's not so much the future of companies, but rather the future of Brazilian employees who have suffered so much. The government does what only L.
