In recent months, Brazil has witnessed a wave of mass layoffs, driven by financial crises and accounting frauds that have shaken the stability of retail giants. The most evident impact is the store closures and the dismissal of thousands of workers.
Mass Layoffs at Casas Bahia and Americanas
Casas Bahia, for example, closed 55 stores throughout 2023, with 17 of these closures occurring in the last quarter. This move resulted in the dismissal of 8,600 employees, part of a strategy to eliminate loss-making retail outlets and cut costs. The company, which reported a loss of R$ 1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2023, also reduced its senior leadership by 42% in an attempt to reverse the unfavorable financial situation.

On the other hand, Americanas, another giant of Brazilian retail, underwent a mass layoff after the discovery of an accounting fraud of R$ 25.2 billion in January 2023. Since then, the company has closed 152 stores and laid off 13,875 employees. This devastating scenario led Americanas to reduce its workforce from 43,123 to 32,248 employees.

Other chains have also felt the impact. Dia, which entered judicial recovery in March 2023, announced the closure of 343 of its 587 stores, concentrating its operations in São Paulo. This will result in approximately 3,500 employees being laid off, reducing its workforce to only 2,000 people.
Carrefour Was Not Immune to the Crisis
The Carrefour reported a loss of R$ 565 million in the last quarter of 2023, which resulted in the closure of 123 stores and the possible layoff of up to 12,500 workers.
