Second Generation of the Toyota Corolla Cross Debuts Between 2026 and 2027 With Design Inspired by the Prius, More Efficient Hybrid Engines, and New Plug-In Version to Expand the Competition in the Medium SUV Market
The second generation of the Toyota Corolla Cross is expected to debut between 2026 and 2027 and promises to mark a turning point in the medium SUV segment. According to information released by Jornal do Carro, the model will inherit the style of the new Corolla sedan, which is set to debut first and serve as a preview of the updated lines.
Although official details are still scarce, the first projections came from Thai designer Theophilus Chin, internationally known as Theottle. He recreated the front of the SUV based on the brand’s new visual standard, and his interpretation went viral on social media.
Design Inspired by the “Hammerhead” and Aggressive Front

In Theottle’s projection, the Corolla Cross 2027 adopts the “Hammerhead” style — already applied in recent Toyota launches, such as Prius, Aqua, and C-HR. The name refers to the hammerhead shark, as the DRLs in a C shape resemble the animal’s eyes and are positioned above the main headlights.

Goodbye falls: Singaporean company Omoway begins production of a motorcycle that doesn’t fall and surprises the market by offering automatic balance technology that reduces accidents and transforms the urban riding experience.
The optical set is narrower and sportier, while the grille appears divided into two parts: an upper strip connects the headlights and displays the Toyota logo, while the lower opening, integrated into the bumper, also houses the fog lights. So far, only the front has been envisioned, with no official projections for the rear or interior.
SUV May Increase in Size and Bet on Hybrid Engines
Rumors suggest that the Corolla Cross 2027 may grow between 5 mm and 15 mm compared to the current generation. The strategy would be to make room for new hybrid engines, reinforcing the SUV’s energy efficiency and technological appeal.
The conventional hybrid version (HEV) is expected to continue with the already known setup: a 1.8 naturally aspirated engine paired with two electric motors connected to the transmission. However, the big news will be the introduction of a plug-in hybrid version (PHEV), which will couple a 1.5 combustion engine with another electric motor, allowing for long distances driven solely in electric mode.
Another bet by Toyota would be a GR hybrid sporty version, equipped with a 2.0 naturally aspirated engine and an additional electric motor, offering all-wheel drive and power close to 200 hp.
Comparisons With Prius and RAV4 Reinforce Global Positioning
This technical setup differs from the system in the RAV4 PHEV, which uses a 2.5 gasoline engine combined with two electric motors to deliver 306 hp. In the case of the Corolla Cross, the proposal is closer to the new Prius, which combines a 2.0 engine with 152 hp with an electric motor of 163 hp, resulting in a total power of 223 hp.
It is important to highlight that this same 2.0 engine from the Prius belongs to the family already used in the combustion versions of the Brazilian Corolla Cross, which increases the likelihood that Toyota will make use of the already established mechanical base in the country.
The information was published by Jornal do Carro, in a report by Rodrigo Tavares, and reinforces Toyota’s movement to face the growing pressure from hybrid and electric Chinese SUVs in the Brazilian market.
In your opinion, can the Corolla Cross 2027 with a refreshed design and plug-in hybrid engine become the most desired SUV from Toyota in the Brazilian market?
