With the new ID in the form of the National Identity Card, Piauí has begun to require CIN to board at bus stations and airports for interstate and international travel. On the eve of Carnival, passengers without updated documents may be barred, even on routes to Mercosur, and should seek to make appointments in advance.

Passengers leaving Piauí by bus or plane are now faced with an immediate requirement: the new ID, now in the form of the National Identity Card, has become a condition for boarding at airports and bus stations within the state. The change affects interstate and international travel and is expected to strain the system during peak travel times.

The guidance has been reinforced by the Public Security Secretariat, through the Digital Citizenship Institute, with a direct alert to avoid impediments at the time of boarding. The message is simple and operational: without a regular CIN, there is a real risk of being blocked, facing queues, rescheduling, and losing the trip, even for destinations within Mercosur.

What Changed in Piauí and Why Control Became Tighter

New ID becomes mandatory in Piauí; National Identity Card and CIN become required for interstate travel and to Mercosur, with the risk of boarding blockage.

The measure was initially adopted only in Piauí and stipulates that the National Identity Card, identified as CIN, must be mandatory for boarding at airports and bus stations. The announced scope includes interstate and international travel, increasing the impact on those crossing state lines or traveling abroad.

The pressing factor is the timing. The requirement arrives on the eve of Carnival, a period when passenger traffic increases significantly. In practice, the rule creates a predictable bottleneck: more people traveling, more document checks, and less room for improvisation at the counter, gate, and platform.

Where the Requirement Applies: Airports, Bus Stations, and Interstate Routes

The central point is not the final destination, but the boarding location within the state. In Piauí, the guidance applies to bus stations and airports, encompassing both bus travels and flights. Those with documents considered irregular or outdated risk being prevented from boarding.

The effect is direct on interstate travel, typical during holidays, family visits, and tourism, as they require more stringent document validation. During peak demand periods, a passenger arriving with inadequate documentation tends to discover the problem too late, when already packed and with tickets issued.

CIN as the New ID: Unified Standard, CPF as the Unique Number, and Anti-Fraud Focus

The National Identity Card is described as a new model of identification adopted nationally, with a unified standard and enhanced security. The document uses the CPF as the unique identification number, reducing duplicities and improving validation.

Another highlighted point is the presence of features that reduce fraud, reinforcing why boarding control is expected to shift to the new model. For passengers, this alters routine: the document no longer serves merely as a card in the pocket but becomes an access key for travel, especially during periods of increased scrutiny.

International Travel and Mercosur: When the New ID Becomes Boarding Document

For those traveling abroad, there is an important detail: on international travel to Mercosur countries, the CIN is accepted as an official identification document at the time of boarding. This extends the reach of the requirement, as it connects airports, bus stations, and international routes under the same verification criteria.

The practical alert is that even when a passenger thinks that “any ID works,” the control can be conducted based on the most recent and standardized document. In this scenario, the absence of the correct document translates into an immediate operational risk, with the possibility of being blocked even in Piauí.

The Official Notice and the Most Common Risk: Waiting Until the Last Minute Before Carnival

The recommendation conveyed by the superintendent of the Digital Citizenship Institute, Marcelo Mascarenha, is for anticipation. The argument is operational and linked to demand: during periods of high traffic, such as Carnival, the demand for updates increases significantly.

The logic of the alert is to avoid the worst kind of problem for the traveler: discovering the requirement while in line, when there is no time to correct. Updating the ID beforehand is described as a way to ensure peace of mind at boarding and to avoid situations of being barred due to irregular documentation.

Who Needs to Obtain the New ID in Piauí

The list of groups that must obtain the National Identity Card includes three specific groups:

People still using the old ID model
Children and adolescents without valid photo ID
Citizens wishing to use the digital version of the ID for travel and services

In practice, this encompasses both those who have never updated their ID and families who rely on photo ID for minors, as well as those seeking the convenience of the digital format for travel and validations.

Service Network in the State: More than 190 Units and 19 in Teresina

To facilitate the requirement, the Digital Citizenship Institute reports a broad service structure in Piauí: more than 190 units operating, with 19 located in Teresina. The distribution is cited as a way to ensure decentralized access, reducing demand concentration at a few points.

In practical terms, this coverage does not eliminate lines during peak season, but it increases the chances for citizens to find a closer service location. The recommendation to anticipate remains the main measure to avoid setbacks.

How Much It Costs and How to Resolve: First Issuance Free and Second Issuance with Fee

The cost is divided into two scenarios. The first issuance of the CIN is free, which lowers barriers for those still on the old ID. The second issuance, in cases of loss or theft, is treated as an exception requiring prompt action and incurs a fee.

In this situation, it is advisable to seek a service unit or to schedule an appointment through the Gov.PI Citizen app. The reported fee for the second issuance is R$ 22.60, which adds to the indirect costs for those needing to resolve the issue urgently just before travel.

In Piauí, the new ID in the form of the National Identity Card has become a practical requirement for those wishing to travel by bus or plane, impacting boarding at bus stations and airports, interstate journeys, international travels, and even Mercosur routes. With Carnival approaching, the combination of high demand and stringent document checks raises the risk of being barred for those without a regular CIN, making early appointment and scheduling the main measure to avoid blockages.

Have you updated your new ID to avoid the risk of being barred at a bus station or airport in Piauí?
