Using Petrobras’ Fund For Firefighting And Amazon Preservation “Is Not The Most Appropriate Path,” Said The Minister Of The Environment.
On Friday, August 23, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia (DEM), declared that he supports the use of Petrobras fund resources to combat wildfires in the Amazon. This value corresponds to 80% of the penalties defined in the agreement made by the company with authorities in the United States, announced in September 2018.
Maia reported that he filed a petition with the Supreme Federal Court (STF) for the release of R$ 2.5 billion from Petrobras, with R$ 1 billion directed towards combating wildfires and the rest for application in education.

Alexandre Moraes, a minister of the STF, set a deadline of 48 hours for the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), the Attorney General’s Office of the Union (AGU), the Attorney General’s Office of the National Treasury (PGFN), and the Ministry of Economy to respond to the request.
On the night of Thursday, 22, President Jair Bolsonaro indicated that he would call all state ministers to form a crisis cabinet due to the wildfires affecting the Amazon region.
During the afternoon, Bolsonaro had already held a meeting with ministers Ricardo Salles (Environment) and Tereza Cristina (Agriculture) to discuss the measures that will be taken to contain the fires.
In a press conference held on the morning of Saturday, 24, to detail the government’s actions in combating wildfires in the Amazon, Salles said, “This is not an issue of our ministry, the resources”.
“This allocation of the fund was defined when the agreement was made with American entities. A change in the allocation would imply renegotiating these issues. The most appropriate path is the one pointed out by Minister General Fernando,” concluded the minister.
The statement refers to a comment made during the same press conference by the Minister of Defense, General Fernando Azevedo e Silva.
According to him, there are currently about R$ 20 million blocked in his ministry, and the Ministry of Economy has already stated that it intends to unblock at least part of this amount to be applied in forest preservation. “I’ll only believe it when I open the vault and see. But it’s agreed with Paulo Guedes.”
The agreement for the creation of the fund mentioned by Salles was closed in 2018 between the Federal Public Ministry, Petrobras, and the U.S. Department of Justice.
