Ampere, the Renault division tasked with driving the transition to electric cars, detailed its plans for the future during the Investor Day. Under the leadership of Luca de Meo and established in early November, Ampere has become an independent company focused on the production of a popular electric car and software.

The new division employs 11 thousand people, 35% of whom are engineers, who will closely monitor the work in the manufacturing plants. ElectriCity, Cléon and Ruitz. In total, the company has capacity for 400 vehicles per year, rising to 620 by 2028. Important numbers, which pave the way for a new electric car from Renault in the near future.

Ampere states that it wants to democratize electric cars in Europe, achieving price parity between electric and internal combustion models, ahead of its competitors in the B and C segments. According to the company, these two categories will represent 75% of the vehicle market electric cars by 2030 and for this reason two platforms are already available for the development of Renault's electric car

The AmpR Small platform for segment B, formerly known as CMF-B EV, and the AmpR Medium for segment C, formerly known as CMF-EV. In addition to launching these architectures, the company will reduce costs to launch a popular electric car. Specifically by 2028, the company plans to reduce variable expenses between the first and second generation of C-segment electric vehicles by 40% through the following interventions:

Reduction of 25% off electric car engine cost, 50% reduction in battery cost per vehicle for the same range, 25% reduction in platform cost per vehicle, 15% reduction in body cost per vehicle and operational efficiency resulting in a 50% reduction in logistics costs and of production.

Ampere wants to achieve price parity by 2027/2028

In this way, Ampere has already partially achieved this objective with the Scenic E-Tech, whose total maintenance, according to the company's own calculations, is equal to that of the hybrid vehicles. In general, the company aims to achieve price parity by 2027/2028 with the second generation, successors to the Megane E-Tech and Scenic E-Tech.

At the same time, the range will expand steadily, with the Renault 5 in 2024 and the Renault 4 in 2025, to be joined by the “Legend”, an A-segment model that will be revealed at Ampere's Capital Markets Day. And the line will be expanded, with the addition of two Renault electric cars for the second generation, for a total of seven cars by 2031.

The Scénic E-Tech will be on the market at the beginning of next year with an entry price of approximately 40 thousand euros.

Sustainability is at the heart of the design of this Renault electric car, with up to 95% recyclable materials. The Renault 5 will be revealed in the first quarter of 2024 and represents the rebirth of an iconic model. This popular electric car offers a range of 400 km for an entry price of 25 thousand euros, which puts it in competition with B-segment hybrids.

The Renault 4 will be launched in 2025 and will share several elements of the Renault 5 such as the AmpR Small platform and the information and entertainment system. Finally, the Legend will be Renault's electric car focused on the urban environment, with an estimated consumption of 10 kWh per 100 km, a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to combustion models sold on the European market this year.
