The Pedreira and Duas Pontes Dams Advance in the Interior of São Paulo, Expanding Storage Capacity, Increasing River Flow, and Strengthening Water Security for Millions of Residents in the Campinas and São Paulo Regions

The works on the Pedreira and Duas Pontes Dams, in the interior of São Paulo, have reached 47% and 58% physical progress. The projects are solidifying as central actions for water security of the State Government, executed under the coordination of SP Águas, linked to the Secretariat of the Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics.

The program is strategic to increase the water supply and improve the management of water resources in the Metropolitan Regions of Campinas and São Paulo.

Located on the Camanducaia and Jaguari rivers, the structures are considered essential to increase water availability in the Piracicaba, Capivari, and Jundiaí River Basin.

Additionally, they contribute to flood control and increase regional water resilience, reinforcing the capacity to respond during times of greater pressure on supply.

Storage Capacity and Impact on Supply

Upon completion of the works, the regulated flow of the Jaguari and Camanducaia rivers will increase from 8.2 m³/s to 17.2 m³/s.

This increase of 9 m³/s will be directed to the supply of cities in the region, enhancing water security in an area marked by intense demand. Combined, the two dams will have a total storage capacity of 85 billion liters of water.

The Pedreira Dam will have a capacity of 32 billion liters, covering an area of 420 hectares, while the Duas Pontes Dam will store 53 billion liters over an area of 880 hectares.

According to Nelson de Campos Lima, director of SP Águas, these structures will integrate into the State’s reservoir system. He emphasizes that with more stored water, it will be possible to ensure better distribution and service to the metropolitan regions of Campinas and São Paulo.

Investments, Timeline, and Population Impact

The total investment in the program is around R$ 1.6 billion, including civil works, expropriations, projects, and consultancies. The forecast is that the works will be completed in the second half of 2026, when the filling process of the reservoirs will begin.

The new structures will directly and indirectly benefit more than 5 million people in 28 municipalities in the region.

Campinas, Piracicaba, Limeira, Americana, Paulínia, Bragança Paulista, and Holambra are among the cities included. The expectation is that the system will promote greater security in supply and strengthen integrated water management, contributing to long-term regional development.

Environmental Recovery Actions

To ensure the full operation of the Duas Pontes Dam, the State Government is executing complementary works aimed at improving the quality of the Camanducaia River, upstream of the future reservoir. Among the actions are the restructuring of the sewage collection, removal, and treatment systems in Amparo and Monte Alegre do Sul.

A specific system will also be implemented to reduce phosphorus loads in the river, an important measure to ensure better environmental conditions in the reservoir.

These initiatives total R$ 532 million in investments allocated to pollution control and recovery of the basin, expanding the program’s benefits for all involved municipalities.

Balance Between Development and Sustainability

According to SP Águas’ president, Camila Viana, the works represent a milestone in the state’s water management.

She states that the dams are essential to balance development and sustainability, strengthening supply, water security, and environmental preservation. According to Viana, these investments benefit millions of São Paulo residents and prepare the state for future climate challenges.

With the progress of these works, São Paulo reinforces long-term water planning and increases the resilience capacity of the regional supply system, ensuring greater security for the population and contributing to the conservation of natural resources.
