From A Boat Ride To The Top Of Global Capitalism: The Unlikely Trajectory Of Rafaela Aponte-Diamant
For decades, maritime transport operated away from the spotlight. However, behind almost everything the world consumes — food, electronics, clothing, fuel — there exists a silent mechanism powered by gigantic ships, ocean routes, and billion-dollar strategic decisions. It is in this scenario that Rafaela Aponte-Diamant emerges, now considered the richest self-made woman in the world, according to Forbes.
At 80 years old, Rafaela leads for the third consecutive year the ranking of women who built their own fortunes. Her net worth is estimated at US$ 37.7 billion (around R$ 215 billion), a figure directly linked to her 50% stake in MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company), the largest shipping company on the planet.
The information was released by Forbes, according to the global billionaire ranking for 2025, which positions Rafaela as the 44th richest person in the world and the 5th richest woman on the planet — an even more remarkable achievement in a sector historically dominated by men.

The MSC Empire: 900 Ships, Millions of Containers, and Billions in Revenue
The financial rise of Rafaela Aponte-Diamant parallels the rapid growth of MSC, a company founded in 1970, in Geneva, Switzerland, alongside her husband, Gianluigi Aponte. The business started modestly, but today controls a colossal fleet of 900 ships, capable of transporting over 4.8 million containers, according to data from the international bank Alphaliner.
Although MSC does not officially disclose its financial numbers, maritime analyst John McCown estimates that the company generated over US$ 28 billion just in 2022, driven by a global boom in maritime transport during and after the pandemic.
In addition to container transport, MSC Group has aggressively expanded its operations. It currently also controls:
- a MSC Cruises, one of the largest cruise operators in the world;
- a Medlog, a land logistics arm;
- a Terminal Investment Limited, a global port terminal operator;
- as well as passenger ferry operations in the Mediterranean.
Since 2019, families in the maritime sector have begun to accumulate record fortunes due to the explosion in global logistics costs. Still, few trajectories attract as much attention as Rafaela’s, who transformed an invisible sector into a global financial empire.
From A US$ 200 Thousand Loan To Absolute Control Of A Global Giant
The story of Rafaela Aponte-Diamant does not begin in boardrooms or large corporations. She met Gianluigi Aponte in the 1960s during a boat trip to the Italian island of Capri. At the time, Gianluigi worked as a captain, transporting tourists between Naples and resorts on the Italian coast.
Rafaela, on the other hand, was the daughter of a Swiss-based Israeli banker, but this did not guarantee an automatic path to wealth. Shortly thereafter, Gianluigi moved to Geneva, where he began working as a broker at a Swiss bank. Nevertheless, in 1970, he decided to leave financial stability and take a high risk.
With a US$ 200 thousand loan (around R$ 1.1 million), the couple bought their first cargo ship, named Patricia. That same year, they officially founded MSC. Instead of competing directly with established giants, they opted for an underexplored strategy: to acquire second-hand ships and operate on less crowded routes, such as the links between Europe and Africa.
The strategy worked. The second ship was named Rafaela and, by 1979, the fleet already totaled 17 vessels. In 1988, the couple entered the cruise sector with the purchase of the ship Monterey — a decision that would prove visionary. During the same period, they created Medlog and, years later, Terminal Investment Limited.
More than 50 years after the founding of MSC, the company remains under the absolute control of the family. Rafaela and Gianluigi are the sole shareholders. Gianluigi serves as CEO, while the couple’s son, Diego Aponte, acts as president of the group. Rafaela, in addition to being on the board of the MSC Foundation, also personally dedicates herself to the decoration of the cruise ships, imprinting her identity on the business.
Do you believe that stories like Rafaela Aponte-Diamant’s show that it is still possible to build global empires starting from scratch, or has this type of trajectory become an exception in today’s world?
