Teen Rescues Crashed Tesla and Discovers Surprising Data Stored in Vehicle's Computer; Restoration Adventure Turns into Mystery and Revelation
Recently, an American teenager named Winston, 18 years old, fulfilled his dream of having a Tesla Model 3. The vehicle, however, did not come into his hands in a conventional way. Winston bought a 2018 model, which had been completely destroyed in an accident, for just $15 (around R$75), at a auction.
Driven by his passion for the billionaire's brand Elon Musk, he decided to restore the car on his own, investing his time and savings in this challenging project.
Winston's Journey with the Tesla Model 3
Winston had been fascinated by Tesla for years, regularly watching the YouTube channel of Rich Rebuilds, an influencer known for restoring Tesla vehicles.

- Sony and Honda have joined forces to create an ultra-tech electric sedan with two motors and a range of up to 700 km
Motivated by these videos, the young man entered several forums and online communities about Tesla repair and began to research the subject intensively.
At the same time, he started working at Chick-Fil-A to earn the money needed for the car and its spare parts.
After saving up for a year, Winston decided it was time to look for a damaged Tesla that he could restore. After months of searching auction sites, he finally found a wrecked Model 3 that seemed ideal for his endeavor.
The car had serious structural damage, including deployed airbags and the passenger compartment. engine damaged, but that didn't faze the young enthusiast.
Restoration and surprising discovery
The restoration process took about three months, during which time Winston had to buy several parts and learn how each component of the Tesla worked. After intense and detailed work, he was able to leave the Model 3 almost as good as new.
However, the real surprise came when he connected a USB flash drive to the car's system to try to access data from the built-in computer.
While accessing the data, Winston found footage from the Tesla's built-in camera that showed the accident that destroyed the car. The captured footage revealed that the vehicle was involved in a violent side (or T-bone) collision.
The recording showed that the former owner was driving calmly when, suddenly, a car appeared on the left and collided with the Tesla, without giving it a chance to brake.
This discovery gave Winston insight into what the car had been through, as well as providing unique context for the project he had undertaken.
Total Tesla Model 3 Project Costs
The restoration cost around $9 in parts, plus $1 in fees, bringing the total investment to approximately $25 (approximately R$125).
By comparison, the price of a used, undamaged Tesla Model 3 ranges from $26 to $41, making Winston's project a worthwhile investment considering the condition of the car after repair.
Summary of costs:
- Purchase of wrecked Tesla Model 3 (2018): U.S. $ one thousand 15
- Spare parts: U.S. $ one thousand 9
- Taxes and fees: U.S. $ one thousand 1
- Total: U.S. $ one thousand 25
Despite the challenges, Winston managed to fulfill his dream of owning a Tesla, transforming a wrecked vehicle into a functional and stylish car. This experience served as a great lesson for the young man, who now has not only a dream car, but also a story of overcoming and learning.
