Along with the USS George Washington, the destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) and the tanker USNS John Lenthal (T-AO 189) also arrived. These ships will head to Japan after the exercise, where the USS George Washington will replace the USS Ronald Reagan, which has been stationed in the country for 10 years.

More recently, during a maintenance period between 2020 and 2021, the ship suffered from a wave of suicides among its sailors. However, having overcome these issues, the aircraft carrier is now ready for its new role in Japan.
