Along with the USS George Washington, the destroyer USS Porter (DDG 78) and the tanker USNS John Lenthal (T-AO 189) also arrived. These ships will head to Japan after the exercise, where the USS George Washington will replace the USS Ronald Reagan, which has been stationed in the country for 10 years.

The USS George Washington is a nuclear aircraft carrier of the Nimitz class, built in honor of the first president of the United States, George Washington. This is the sixth ship of its class and carries a powerful air wing composed of 90 aircraft and helicopters, including the modern F/A-18 Super Hornet and F-35C Lightning II, which, according to Poder Naval, had to make an emergency landing at the Naval Air Base of São Pedro de Aldeia (RJ).

More recently, during a maintenance period between 2020 and 2021, the ship suffered from a wave of suicides among its sailors. However, having overcome these issues, the aircraft carrier is now ready for its new role in Japan.
