Toyota's new hybrid car breaks record with 5 km range. Find out how the Toyota Prius LE, the automaker's hybrid model, entered the Guinness Book of Records by achieving an impressive average of 40 km/l.
A trip with a Toyota Prius LE, Toyota's new hybrid car, broke a world record in the Guinness Book, the book of records. The model achieved the lowest fuel consumption mark with an average of almost 40 km/l, the equivalent of 93,158 miles per gallon. The fuel consumption of Toyota's hybrid car was much lower than that declared by the brand, which officially promises 24,3 km/l.
Toyota's new car has covered elevations of up to 2.100 meters
The record-breaking journey with Toyota's hybrid car was made by Wayne Gerdes, who left Los Angeles City Hall for New York City Hall, covering a total of 5.188,7 kilometers.
The Toyota Prius LE used in the feat is a fifth-generation model with a hybrid engine, which offers more versatility in choosing the use of ethanol or gasoline. Although electric cars are more sustainable because they do not emit pollutants, drivers are dependent on charging stations.

The trip across the east coast of the United States included stretches with elevations of up to 2.100 feet and even a passage through the Mojave Desert, where temperatures exceed 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Toyota celebrated the feat and highlighted that factors such as these show how a vehicle like the Toyota Prius LE can still achieve great efficiency despite challenging conditions.
The record holder did not disclose data on the fuel used in the Toyota car during the trip or even the fuel costs of the Prius. However, it is known that the Toyota hybrid car has a tank with a capacity of 42,8 liters that allows it to travel up to 1.693 kilometers on a full fuel tank.
Gerdes was already involved in another previous record
The person responsible for the new historic milestone with the new Toyota car, Wayne Gerdes, is an American journalist famous for making the same journey with different car models.
He had already entered the record books on three other occasions: in 2011, with a hybrid Kia Optima and in 2013 and 2015, with diesel models from Volkswagen. Additionally, it managed to achieve an average of 76,6 miles per gallon aboard a Kia Niro Hybrid in 2017, equivalent to 32,56 km/l.
Gerdes' main tip for saving fuel is in line with the experts' advice: drive gradually. He emphasizes that drivers should accelerate continuously and evenly, as well as brake early when they realize they will have to stop.
Gerdes says that a lot of planning goes into a record attempt like this with Toyota's hybrid car. You can't just do it blindly. You have to leave traffic lights calmly, accelerate steadily and smoothly, anticipate braking when you see stops ahead, among other things.
Why is the Toyota Prius LE so economical?
Gerdes drove the traditional hybrid, not the Prime, which achieved better fuel efficiency than most plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). In a Lexus RX450h+ PHEV, you can get an average of 30,2 mpg. The Prius Prime, however, is one of the greenest cars in the world, delivering around 48 mpg.
To give you an idea, a Tesla Model Y delivers 49,7 km/L in highway driving. Toyota's new car is also quite economical, delivering 24,2 km/L, according to the EPA. It is equipped with a 2-liter, four-cylinder engine with 150 horsepower and 18,5 kgfm of torque.
Good thing skewer in come very expensive.
How cool to know what options the 1st world has…
Even the Ford Fusion hybrid can do this too, just drive at 100 km/h and it will only use the electric kotor, above that the combustion enters. Which charges the battery automatically.
Toyota is today the biggest and best automaker in the world, period.
