New Hybrid Car From Toyota Sets Record With Range Of 5 Thousand Km. Discover How The Toyota Prius LE, A Hybrid Model From The Manufacturer, Made Its Way Into The Guinness Book By Achieving An Impressive Average Of 40 Km/L.
A trip with a Toyota Prius LE, the new hybrid car from Toyota, broke a world record in the Guinness Book, the book of records. The model achieved the lowest fuel consumption mark with an average of almost 40 km/l, equivalent to 93.158 miles per gallon. The fuel consumption of Toyota’s hybrid car was much lower than the figure declared by the manufacturer, which officially promises 24.3 km/l.
New Car From Toyota Traveled Elevations Of Up To 2,100 Meters
The trip that marked the record-breaking feat with Toyota’s hybrid car was made by Wayne Gerdes, who left Los Angeles City Hall heading to New York City Hall, totaling 5,188.7 kilometers traveled.
The Toyota Prius LE used in this achievement is a fifth-generation model with hybrid technology, offering more versatility in choosing the use of ethanol or gasoline. Although electric cars are more sustainable because they do not emit pollutants, drivers remain dependent on charging stations.

The journey across the east coast of the United States included sections with elevations of up to 2,100 meters and even a passage through the Mojave Desert, where temperatures exceed 40ºC. Toyota celebrated the accomplishment and emphasized that such factors demonstrate how a vehicle like the Toyota Prius LE can still achieve great efficiency despite challenging conditions.
The record holder did not disclose data about the fuel used in the Toyota car during the trip or the costs of filling up the Prius. However, it is known that the Toyota hybrid car has a tank capacity of 42.8 liters that allows it to run up to 1,693 kilometers on a full tank.
Gerdes Was Already Involved In Another Previous Record
The individual responsible for the new historic mark with the new Toyota car, Wayne Gerdes, is a well-known American journalist famous for making the same trip with different car models.
He had previously entered the record book on three other occasions: in 2011, with a hybrid Kia Optima, and in 2013 and 2015, with diesel models from Volkswagen. In addition, he managed to achieve an average of 76.6 miles per gallon aboard a Kia Niro Hybrid in 2017, equivalent to 32.56 km/l.
Gerdes’s main tip for saving fuel aligns with expert advice: drive smoothly. He emphasizes that drivers should accelerate steadily and evenly, as well as brake early when they see they will have to stop.
Gerdes states that there is a lot of planning for a record attempt like this with Toyota’s hybrid car. One cannot just go in blind. It is necessary to leave traffic lights calmly, accelerate steadily and smoothly, anticipate braking when noticing stops ahead, among other things.
Why Is The Toyota Prius LE So Economical?
Gerdes drove the traditional hybrid, not the Prime, which achieved better fuel efficiency than most plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). In a Lexus RX450h+ PHEV, it is possible to achieve an average of 30.2 km per liter. The Prius Prime, however, is one of the most eco-friendly cars in the world, offering about 48 km/l equivalent.
For reference, a Tesla Model Y offers 49.7 km/L in highway driving. The new Toyota car is also quite economical, delivering 24.2 km/L, according to the EPA. It is equipped with a 2-liter engine and four cylinders, with a power output of 150 horsepower and 18.5 kgfm of torque.
