Corolla Cross Arrives With Both Feet in the Door, Shines and Sustains Toyota’s Reign Against BYD and GWM Manufacturers
The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Flex has been the key to keeping Toyota ahead of Chinese brands in the hybrid market. If the automaker relied solely on the Corolla Sedan, it would already be “almost dead” in this competitive segment. However, the Corolla Cross is a true treasure for the company.
Thanks to the robust sales of the Corolla Cross Hybrid Flex, Toyota continues to lead against BYD, GWM, and Caoa Chery. Recent modifications in the 2025 line have made the Corolla Cross even more attractive and competitive. The result? The car achieved 1,304 registrations in May, showing its growing popularity.
Meanwhile, the Corolla Hybrid Flex (sedan) sold only 282 units in the same period. When combining both models, Toyota closed May with 1,947 registrations, reaching first place for the month. Over five months, the automaker totals an impressive 8,897 sales, maintaining its leadership for the year.

The Corolla and Corolla Cross Duo Stands Out in the Market
According to data from Fenabrave and ABVE, the competition in the hybrid market is tight, with minimal differences between brands. The Corolla and Corolla Cross duo stands out for being the only ones to offer the HEV flex system. The models from Caoa Chery, such as Tiggo 5x, Arrizo 6, and Tiggo 7, utilize the MHEV (micro-hybrid) system.
Yaris Cross is Toyota’s New Bet
However, when considering only the models, Toyota loses its leadership. To reverse this, the company plans to launch the Yaris Cross Hybrid Flex in Brazil soon. In May, the BYD Song Plus was the best seller, with 1,559 registrations. The GWM Haval H6 came in second, totaling 1,438 sales, split between 585 units of the HEV version and 853 of the PHEV (plug-in hybrid) versions.
According to Fenabrave, Toyota leads the hybrid car market with 22.9%, closely followed by BYD with 20.9%. GWM has 17.7%, while Caoa Chery has 10.5%. Check out the complete ranking of the top 15 accumulated below.
