Trump’s Plane Suffered Electrical Issue, Returned to Base and Delayed Trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos 2026.
A plane carrying Donald Trump had to return to the military base in the United States after experiencing an electrical issue, temporarily interrupting the American president’s trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos 2026.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night, shortly after Air Force One took off from the Washington area, prompting the crew to adopt a safety protocol and decide on the preventive return of the aircraft.
Despite the setback, Trump continued his journey a few hours later on another plane and maintained his planned international agenda.

Emergency Landing in Campos Amarais After Bird Strike on Small Plane
According to the White House, the decision was made out of an abundance of caution, as soon as the aircraft’s system indicated an electrical anomaly.
The landing occurred without incident at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, and there was no risk to those onboard.

Electrical Issue on Trump’s Plane Triggers Safety Protocol
The White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, explained that Air Force One experienced “a minor electrical issue” shortly after takeoff.
The malfunction led the crew to interrupt the international flight and return immediately to base, following the strict safety standards that govern any presidential flight.
“After takeoff, the crew of Air Force One identified a minor electrical issue. Out of an abundance of caution, the aircraft is returning to Joint Base Andrews. The president and his team will board another plane and continue their trip to Switzerland,” the White House stated in an official release.
A reporter onboard reported that the lights in the press cabin briefly went out after takeoff, although no additional technical explanation was provided at that time.

Trip to Davos 2026 Remains on Track After Plane Change
Even with the setback, Trump’s international commitment was not canceled. About two hours after the first takeoff attempt, the president boarded a smaller aircraft and resumed his journey to Davos, where he is expected to attend the World Economic Forum.
According to Reuters, the landing of Air Force One was safely executed at around 1:10 AM Brasília time.
By around 2 AM, Trump and his entourage were airborne again, ensuring their presence at the event that gathers political and business leaders from around the world.
Air Force One Fleet Faces Aging and Delays
The episode reignites the debate over the aging aircraft currently used as Air Force One. The two operational aircraft are Boeing 747-200B models that have been flying for almost four decades.
Although they are highly modified and maintain high safety standards, the length of time in service has been a recurring target of criticism from Trump.
During his first term, the U.S. government renegotiated contracts with Boeing for the acquisition of two new 747-8 models.
However, the program has faced repeated delays, and the expectation is that the new aircraft will not be ready before the end of a potential second presidential term.
Qatar Jet and Adaptation for Presidential Use
In May 2025, Trump also accepted a luxury Boeing 747-8 offered by the Qatari government to eventually join the presidential fleet.
The initiative has generated scrutiny and intense political questioning in the United States.
Currently, the jet is undergoing a comprehensive adaptation process to meet the American president’s security requirements, including communication systems, defense, and protection against electronic threats.
So far, the Department of Defense has not released an official timeline for the completion of these modifications.
What Makes Air Force One a Unique Aircraft
The term Air Force One designates any aircraft of the United States Air Force that is carrying the sitting president.
In practice, it refers to the planes specially prepared for this strategic function.
These aircraft are equipped with in-flight refueling capability, electronic systems reinforced against electromagnetic pulses, and communication equipment that allows the president to command the country from anywhere in the world.
The interior sums up to 372 square meters spread over three floors, featuring a presidential suite, a conference room, and a complete medical area.
In addition to the president, the plane carries advisors, Secret Service agents, journalists, and official guests.
The operation is conducted by the Presidential Air Transport Group, linked to the Military Office of the White House, active since 1944.
Previous Incidents Reinforce Caution in Presidential Flights
Although rare, the electrical issue faced by Trump’s plane is not an isolated case in the history of presidential aviation.
In 2011, a flight of Air Force One aborted its landing due to bad weather while carrying then-President Barack Obama.
In 2012, Air Force Two, with Vice President Joe Biden on board, was struck by birds and had to make a precautionary landing.
These episodes reinforce why any anomaly, even considered minor, results in swift and conservative decisions, as occurred now on Trump’s trip to Davos 2026.
