The suggestion, however, raises questions about Ukraine's future. Since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022, the government in Kiev has been trying to regain control of occupied areas. In addition, Ukraine is seeking to recover Crimea, annexed by Russia in 2014.
Zelensky rejects proposal on Crimea
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has publicly rejected any suggestion of ceding Crimea or other parts of the territory.
On Tuesday, he said these proposals did not represent Washington’s official position. He said agreeing to discuss Crimea’s sovereignty would be “enter the format that Russia wants".
Zelensky stressed that he is not willing to negotiate sovereign territories and reinforced that Crimea remains part of Ukraine.Crimea, our sovereign territories, are not subject to discussion”, He stated.
Accusations against China increase tension
On the same day, Zelensky accused China of indirect involvement in military support for Russia, saying Chinese citizens were working in Russian drone factories. He also suggested that Moscow may have stolen drone technology from Beijing.
The comments came just days after Zelensky first alleged that China was supplying weapons and gunpowder to Russia. Beijing has denied the allegations.
While he did not provide evidence of any official arms shipments, Zelensky said the Kremlin could have access to Chinese technology without the Beijing government’s knowledge. We believe that Russia may have stolen these technologies or made some deal with these citizens outside of the agreements with the Chinese leadership."He said.
Chinese presence on the front worries Ukraine
Zelensky also revealed that at least 155 Chinese citizens were fighting alongside Russian forces. Two of these fighters were reportedly captured by Ukrainian troops.
Ukrainian authorities claim that Russia is recruiting Chinese citizens through social media, something that has been denied by Beijing.
In response, the Ukrainian government summoned China's ambassador to Kyiv, Ma Shengkun, to express its concerns. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry presented alleged evidence of Chinese involvement in the production of military equipment on Russian soil.
According to Deputy Foreign Minister Yevhen Perebyinis, the actions of Chinese companies and the presence of Chinese citizens in the war are a cause for “grave concern”. Ukrainian intelligence services have reportedly forwarded this information to the Chinese authorities.
