Company Develops Unique Wind Turbine That Features a Tree Shape and Can Generate the Same Amount of Clean Energy as Larger Projects.
The wind turbines are a great source of clean energy, but traditional models have problems, as they are imposing, intrusive structures and do not operate well with just a light breeze. Thus, the French company New Wind produced a wind turbine resembling a tree that operates with weak winds.
Wind Energy Turbine with Microturbines is 9 Meters Tall
The trees that generate clean energy have plastic leaves that silently spin with the breeze, allowing the wind to blow from any direction. While larger industrial turbines, common in wind farms, only operate with winds above 35 km/h, the leaves of this wind turbine capture energy from winds below 8 km/h.
The ‘wind trees,’ as the company refers to them, stand over 9 meters tall and 7 meters wide, boasting a total of 54 green leaf turbines that can generate up to 5.4 kilowatts of energy at a time and generate around 2,400 kWh per year. New Wind estimates that the trees could meet up to half the energy demands of an average French household per year or power a small low-consumption office.

Each “leaf” of this new wind turbine is called an Aeroleaf and is made of lightweight plastic. This plastic has been treated with resin that protects it from bad weather, such as moisture and salt, making it quite useful if the wind turbine is installed in a coastal city.
Tree-Shaped Wind Turbine Costs R$ 3,800
Moreover, the turbines are connected in parallel so that if one stops working for any reason, the others will not be affected. A major advantage of this wind system over solar energy is its space efficiency, as a 5.4 kW solar panel would take up about 131 square meters of roof space, whereas the curved branches of a wind tree could be attached to any balcony or roof.
With their bimorphic leaves, the trees can be installed anywhere. In the middle of a garden, on top of a roof, or even in the middle of a busy city.
Each microturbine of the Wind Tree costs £695 per Aeroleaf for standard versions and £994 per Aeroleaf for hybrid versions. These amounts are equivalent to R$ 3,828.55 and R$ 5,475, respectively, at current exchange rates.
Innovation in the Clean Energy Market
The company is developing a new wind turbine in the shape of a flower, which allows the generation of clean energy without producing any noise, and it is directional. The decibels of this turbine are so low that they are not perceptible to humans.
This detail is essential for the installation of the system in any location, especially in urban areas. Due to its flower shape, the mini wind turbine reduces the risk of collision with birds. Currently, the flower-shaped wind turbines are being marketed in three options that vary in performance and size, depending on the customer’s demand.
The smallest turbine is only one meter long and is ideal for those looking to benefit from clean energy off the grid, such as for camping. The medium model, which is three meters long, is the most frequently purchased by those planning to install a small wind turbine in their homes and small businesses. Produced with fiberglass blades, the wind turbine kit includes a generator, an additional battery, a grid inverter, and a charge controller.
