With a Municipal GDP of R$ 86.9 Billion in 2023, the Capital of Ceará Strengthens Tourism in December and January and Boosts the Search for the Most Awarded Water Park in the Country.

Fortaleza, the capital of Ceará, appears again as the city with the highest municipal GDP in the Northeast, with R$ 86.9 billion in 2023, and ends the year with tourism booming, driven by heat, beaches, and a strong summer travel agenda. The figures were released in December and reinforce the economic weight of the capital in the regional scenario, according to data attributed to IBGE and reported by local media.

The practical effect of this combination of economy and tourism is clear during the high season. In December and January, the demand for sun and sea destinations rises, and Fortaleza often tops travel lists by combining urban infrastructure, hotel networks, and quick access to coastal attractions.

In this context, a name frequently appears in searches and family itineraries. Beach Park, in Aquiraz, in the metropolitan region, is recognized by awards and rankings as the most prominent water park in Brazil, becoming the “main plan” for many people traveling to Ceará in the summer.

The competition for accommodation, tickets, and transportation, however, also intensifies typical issues of the season. Heavier traffic, higher prices, and crowding during peak times become part of the experience for those who wait until the last minute to decide.

Fortaleza’s GDP Shows Why the Capital Concentrates Business and Tourism in the Northeast

The figure of R$ 86.93 billion for Fortaleza in 2023 is presented as a milestone that keeps the city in regional leadership, with a relevant share of Ceará’s economy. According to an analysis by Ipece based on information from the period, the capital concentrates a significant portion of the state’s output, even with variations over the years.

In addition to being a tourist showcase, Fortaleza also operates as a hub for services, commerce, and infrastructure, which helps explain why the city maintains significant activity even outside of peak season. At the end of the year, this economic base tends to amplify the flow, as the supply of flights, hotels, and tourist services is already ready to operate at scale.

Beach Park in Aquiraz Gains Strength as the Most Remembered Water Park in Brazil

The Beach Park is located in Aquiraz, near the coast close to Fortaleza, and has become one of Ceará’s biggest attractions for those seeking fun on hot days. The proximity to the capital facilitates day trips and aligns with the year-end travel profile, when many families split their time between the beach, urban excursions, and attractions for children.

In 2025, the park topped a national tourism vote, being named Best Water Park in Brazil in an industry award. Such recognition directly influences purchasing behavior, as many people use “the best in Brazil” as a shortcut to choose a destination without extensive research.

International rankings have also highlighted the park. Travel reports cited the Beach Park’s performance in lists related to TripAdvisor, helping to reinforce its image as a “must-visit” attraction for anyone going to Ceará in the summer.

In practice, the experience can vary greatly depending on the day and time. During New Year’s weeks, school vacations, and January, the volume of visitors usually increases wait times and queues, making planning as crucial as purchasing tickets.

For part of the audience, the discussion is different. Some prefer thermal water parks or complexes in other regions of Brazil, arguing that “better” depends on what a person wants, whether it be adrenaline, children’s attractions, structure, or final cost.

Summer in Fortaleza Requires Planning to Enjoy Water Parks, Beaches, and Excursions

Those traveling in December and January typically encounter strong heat and significant activity, so it’s wise to consider the basics in advance. Well-located accommodations can reduce stress, especially if the itinerary includes both Fortaleza and Aquiraz during the same period.

At the water park, arriving early tends to help take advantage of more attractions before peak times. On very busy days, creating a priority list can save time lost trying to “decide on the spot” amidst the queues.

To balance the itinerary, many people alternate a day at the park with a lighter day of beach and dining. This way, relaxation is included in the package, and the trip doesn’t turn into just a rush between one displacement and another.

Strong Tourism Generates Income but Increases Prices and Pressures the City in Peak Season

The increase in tourism usually generates temporary jobs and services, from ride-sharing to restaurants and guided tours, which helps spread income across various points of the chain. Fortaleza benefits from this dynamic due to its existing urban scale and wide offering of commerce and services.

At the same time, the most sought-after period of the year brings predictable side effects. With high demand, tariffs rise, competition for accommodation increases, and traffic worsens, especially in transit to the coast and during peak hours.

Another sensitive point is the perception of “city for tourists” versus “city for residents.” During busy times, part of the population complains about overcrowding in busy areas, while the tourism sector argues that the economic gain justifies and sustains jobs.

In the end, the scenario creates an interesting contrast. The same Fortaleza that appears as a regional economic power must deal with the cost of being a desired destination, precisely when more Brazilians seek sun and heat to close the year.

If you had to choose now, would you prefer Ceará for the famous water park or do you think the best of summer is just staying at the beaches and cheaper excursions? And for you, is the title of “best park in Brazil” a real merit or more marketing than experience? Leave your opinion in the comments.
