The Expansion of the Wind Energy Sector in Bahia and Piauí by Mid-November Reached 3,934.81 MW Released by the National Electric Energy Agency.

According to data from the agency, five new wind energy parks were registered in November, which together total 155.4 MW of installed capacity with wind turbines, divided into two wind farms, one in Bahia and another in Piauí.

Growth in the Brazilian Wind Energy Industry

Despite this growth, thermoelectric plants were by far the largest growing segment in the electric sector this year, mainly due to the entry of UTE Porto de Sergipe in March, which added 1,500 MW to the National Interconnected System (SIN). For the year, there are 2,034 MW of wind energy that started operating in Brazil in states like Bahia and Piauí.

The wind energy sector, which has a higher predominance in Bahia and Piauí, can be considered the second with 1,115 MW distributed across 34 projects, followed by solar photovoltaics with 628 MW in 16 plants, 15 small hydropower plants (PCHs) that contributed 156.16 MW, and one small hydroelectric power plant (CGH) with 1 MW. No new large hydropower plants (UHEs) were launched this year in Brazil.

Many Other Renewable Energy Projects Are Expected to Arrive This Year in Brazil

With this result, Aneel indicates that there are an additional 379 MW to be commissioned in the last 45 days of the year in different states, this time Bahia and Piauí will be left out. In total, about 338.85 MW of wind energy, plus 28.20 MW of solar energy and another 11.89 MW of thermoelectric plants. Thus, the year is expected to end with 4,313 MW of new plants. In the last 10 years, this is the third lowest volume of new plants, behind 2012 with 3,982 MW and 2011 when the country had 4,199 MW installed.

However, in the next two years, the forecast is that the volumes to be commissioned will speed up again. In 2021, 7,139 MW are projected, and 13,564 MW the following year, which, if confirmed, would be the highest level of new generation capacity since the beginning of the historical series measured by Aneel, which started in 1997.
